Rooted in the broader discourse of sustainability but also open to questioning its prevailing narratives, COMPASS welcomes work that critically examines how technology intersects with social, environmental, and economic systems. This year's theme encourages a deeper, situated perspective on how technological practices emerge as solutions, but also contributors to the complexities they claim to address. COMPASS draws from a wide array of disciplines: computer and information sciences, social sciences, critical geography, environmental studies, economics, climate studies, and engineering. We aim to foster a discussion that interrogates not only the potentials but also the limitations of technology-led interventions in sustainability. This includes research that explores power dynamics, inequality, and extraction—how technology might reinforce or disrupt existing systems. We encourage work from activists, worker advocates, and indigenous scholars, alongside those studying topics such as labour movements, climate adaptation, and the ethics of sustainability practices. COMPASS values research that brings forth the often-unseen political and material consequencesof digital infrastructure in shaping futures. COMPASS explicitly promotes multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary research and practice that address key challenges for sustainable societies including, but not limited to, equity, health, education, poverty, accessibility, conservation, climate change, energy, infrastructure and economic growth. We also welcome research on the ethics of technology, especially from a critical perspective, that explores limitations and concerns with technology-led solutions for sustainable societies. COMPASS also has a particular commitment to approaches and research that address the challenges faced by under-represented and marginalized communities. The theme of the conference will be Computing in Place. We also invite submissions that speak to that theme and/or contribute to one or more of the following areas: * Systems and IoT for Sustainable Societies * HCI, Design and Critical Perspectives * AI, ML and Data Science for Sustainable Societies * Development, Economics and Policy * Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change * Technology, Media, and Social Practice Papers: In our papers track, we welcome a variety of submission types, including deployment experiences, practitioner reports, user studies, ethnographies, design research, and systems building. We invite contributions from a range of fields, practices, and individuals who may not see themselves as traditionally members of 'computing' disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences, climate and sustainability research, and community advocacy. Accepted papers will be published as a conference proceedings with the ACM. RIPE 89 Student Event: The Czech Internet Community in Focus

Dear colleagues, In less than a month, RIPE NCC will be hosting another RIPE meeting and this time around we're heading to the beautiful city of Prague, Czech Republic! The dates are October 28 - November 1; registration for the meeting is still open and a draft agenda is published with the final version coming soon. For more details, check the official page: https://ripe89.ripe.net Pre-RIPE 89 Online student event On Monday October 14 (17:00 - 18:30 UTC+2), NCC will organise a free online event aimed at people currently studying in the fields of networking, computer science, internet governance and other fields relevant to the RIPE community. The goal is to introduce them to the RIPE Community, encourage them to participate at the RIPE Meeting (in-person or online) and provide them with tips on how to make the most out of it. In this edition, we are putting a spotlight on the Czech Internet community and their remarkable contributions to building a stable, robust, and resilient Internet. We prepared a great agenda featuring excellent speakers who will share their firsthand experiences in founding, managing, and supporting critical infrastructure projects and initiatives in Czechia. As we are targeting undergrad and master students, the speakers will keep the content relatively high-level and focused on the importance of strong communities. The Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) is co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS). PASC25 will be held from June 16 to 18, 2025, at FHNW Campus Brugg-Windisch, Switzerland. I’ve been to this conference several times and found it to be a welcoming community particularly interested in best practices for scientific software development and case studies of social science methods being used to improve scientific infrastructure/development—including work practices. I see the Labor Tech community as particularly well positioned to address topics like the "extra work" of reproducibility efforts, software stewardship, and open source community building as well as the professionalization (or gigification?) of scientific software development and diversity issues within that career path. Papers accepted for PASC25 will be presented as talks and published in the Proceedings of the PASC Conference, accessible via the ACM Digital Library. We employ a rigorous academic peer-review process: most notably, we allow the possibility for provisional acceptance (revision and author rebuttal). For that reason, I’d encourage you to submit even if you’re not quite happy with the draft. The guidelines for submissions are published at https://pasc25.pasc-conference.org/submission/guidelines-for-papers/. *Papers are due Dec 6* with first round notifications in February. Hello RIPE RACI community, My name is Hiroaki Kanematsu, a Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University (Japan). I am conducting an online academic survey on professionalism and ethics among IT professionals. I have already conducted this survey in Japan among the IT engineers' community including JANOG, and would like to invite members of the RIPE community to participate and make comparisons.
