They have been possible thanks to Free and Open Source Technology development projects, involving diverse communities and social processes. Very well known cases are the communities developing Linux, OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Wikipedia. The maturity of these communities has allowed the emergence of Associations, Institutions and Foundations, such as, the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative. Freely Accessible Technologies and Knowledge Resources have a strong potential for generating Social Benefits (Endogenous Development, Social Autonomy, Social Self-Organization, Education and Learning, Organisational and Institutional improvement). Their promise resides in both the potential to create local communities cultivating their own know-how in accordance to the local social needs, and in the applications of their products. This has been particularly well cultivated in the traditions of ancestral societies.
