Two weeks left to join RIPE NCC IXP Tools Hackathon, 22-23 October, Madrid

Dear colleagues, together with Euro-IX, Comcast and ISOC, the RIPE NCC is hosting a hackathon focused on developing tools for Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), in the weekend before RIPE73, in Madrid: https://atlas.ripe.net/hackathon/ixp-tools/#!the-event While the past three hackathons have specifically focused on RIPE Atlas, this event will include other data sources as well, such as: the Routing Information Service (RIS) and the PeeringDB. We will work on existing software tools that deal with IXP-data-integration in order to solve some of the challenges that operators have when making peering decisions, and to illustrate the impact of IXPs on the Internet routing and connectivity. We are looking for designers and developers, students and network operators, and of course colleagues from IXPs, to work together on hacking the new & old toolsets and visualizations! The next RIPE Meeting is coming up again - your chance to present about some interesting Open Source If you would like to give a presentation during the OpenSource WG session, then please contact us (the WG chairs). In general, each talk is 15-30 mins (depending on how much time is needed). If you have some idea and not sure how/if you should present something then feel free to contact us as well to discuss the idea. For small project updates, we are planning to reserve 30 mins again at the end of the WG session. These short 5..10(max) min updates/talks are decided on the day before the WG session on a time/space available base. No need to submit anything for these talks at this time. High-Speed Network Traffic Monitoring and Troubleshooting using ntopng [20 min] This talk highlights the design and implementation of ntopng, an open source web-based traffic monitoring application able to characterise protocols, user traffic behavior, and identify application traffic. ntopng can spot network bottlenecks, monitor network QoS/QoE, trigger alerts based on thresholds, and assist in network troubleshooting. Leveraging on PF_RING, ntop’s high-speed packet processing framework, ntopng can monitor high-speed networks (up to 100 Gbit when used with a flow-based probe) as well be used as a NetFlow/IPFIX/sFlow collector for flows generated by network routers. ntopng is released under GPLv3 license and its code is available at https://github.com/ntop/ntopng Presenter(s): Luca Deri <deri(a)ntop.org>, Simone Mainardi <mainardi(a)ntop.org> C. Ideas and Challenges on testing a routing protocol - Experiences testing Quagga [20 min] Overview on tools and methologies for testing a routing protocol and the challenges. The talk gives a overview of the work OpenSourceRouting does on Quagga, tools used and the experience of it. The talk is about challenges in building and testing across multiple (unix-based) Operating Systems, experience in static analysis, testing for compliance and scale and automating it all. Presenter(s): Martin Winter <mwinter(a)netdef.org> D. Honeypot as a Service [20 min] Honeypots represent a powerful tool for detecting malicious hosts on the Internet. One of their weaknesses is in their small number and in the fact that with time their addresses become known. To mitigate this disadvantage, we developed a concept of hosted honeypots we call Honeypot as a Service (HaaS) in which normal Internet users may easily participate. By providing such an open tool, the number of running honeypots may be increased significantly. In this presentation, I will present the open source tools we use to run this system and our current experience with its deployment on 2000 devices from project Turris. FRAND licensing—the acronym stands for "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory"—is incompatible with open source, which will therefore find itself excluded from much of the EU's grand new Digital Single Market strategy. Is this simple stupidity or is there some old-fashioned wrong-doing being perpertraded? Anyone familiar with this process in this list who could provide a bit more insight? Joao

Kea (ISC's new DHCP server) license change

All, I saw this on social media last week: https://www.isc.org/blogs/kea-license-2-0/ Personally I think it's a very good change. A ton of ISC and other BSD-licensed software has been added to proprietary products by companies who give little or nothing back. While anti-social, this is probably even a rational decision by the people in charge. It doesn't lead to a robust and healthy software ecosystem in the long run though. Cheers, -- Shane

Hi everyone, RIPE is getting close and we have finally the program for the OpenSource Working Group together. We have 2 interesting talks about Routing: GoBGP, a BGP implementation in Go and Freerouter another Open Source Router implementation. And finally, for all the coders and programmers out there, we have an interesting presentation about code fuzzing and static analysis as used by the Knot DNS team. Calling all software developers, designers and network operators! The next RIPE Atlas hackathon takes place 14-15 November in Bucharest, right before RIPE 71. We're looking for creative thinkers to help us find new ways to use RIPE Atlas data to monitor networks and troubleshoot issues as well as ways to improve the existing toolset. Is this you?
