New on RIPE Labs: SHA2017: Hackers' Camping, RIPE Topics
by Vesna Manojlovic 04 Aug '17

04 Aug '17

Dear colleagues, Today begins the newest edition of four-yearly Dutch summer camping conferences for and by hackers: SHA2017. http://sha2017.org/ Since there is an overlap between topics and participants within the RIPE community, this is an invitation to the talks and workshops - a small selection was recommended, from more then 200 lectures. There is a special sub-selection relevant to Open Source WG. Read more about it in this RIPE Labs article: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/becha/sha2017-hackers-camping-ripe-topics ... or if you are there too, get in touch :) Regards, Vesna Manojlovic Community Builder RIPE NCC

Agenda Open Source WG RIPE74, Budapest
by Martin Winter 18 Apr '17

18 Apr '17

Agenda for The OpenSource WG session (May 11, 2017, RIPE74, Budapest) A. Administrative Matters (Working Group Chairs) . Welcome . finalize agenda . approval of minutes from previous WG meeting(s) . review of action list B. Kea - a modern DHCP server (Tomek Mrugalski, ISC) Version 1.2 of Kea, a new DHCP solution from ISC, was released in April. It adds a number of new features: a REST API that can expose management commands over an http/JSON interface, a sample python based management client that is scripting friendly, many new commands and much more. The presentation will describe several features not common in other servers: modular storage for leases and host reservations (CSV file, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra), scalability (millions of devices handled by a single instance), flex-id (a novel, flexible method of using arbitrary part of the DHCP packet to identify a device) and several others. A brief discussion about the Kea roadmap and perhaps a sneak preview of the upcoming features will conclude the talk. C. Turris Omnia and it's crowdfunding campaign (Ondrej Filip, cz.nic) Turris Omnia is an SW and HW open source router. A launch of its production was financed by crowdfunding campaign. This presentation will show pros and cons of such funding model. And also describe difficulties in manufacturing open source hardware. It will also discuss some future possibilities for open source router development. D. RPKI Tools (Andreas Reuter, FU Berlin) The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the fundamental routing protocol of the Internet. BGP is ultimately based on trust, which unfortunately is the cause of some glaring vulnerabilities. The Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) is part of an on-going effort to secure BGP. It provides attestation objects for Internet resources. In this talk, we first give a brief overview about the RPKI architecture, from repositories to BGP routers. Then, we introduce two open source RPKI tools, RPKI MIRO and RTRlib. RPKI MIRO is a framework to monitor and inspect RPKI repositories. Part of this is the RPKI Browser, a graphical user interface that gives convenient access to the structure of the RPKI and the content of RPKI objects. RTRlib is a C library that implements client functionality to gather data from RPKI caches and perform origin validation. It is used in several applications (e.g., Quagga) to validate and monitor BGP updates. These tools are helpful for researchers, developers of routing software, and network operators. E. FRRouting (Martin Winter, NetDEF) FRRouting is a new routing protocol suite which is based on Quagga and runs under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation. This talk introduces FRRouting. FRRouting aims to provide much faster and more test-driven development. The presentation looks at the motivation behind FRRouting, what new features it provides now, the future outlook and how to participate F. OpenSource Lightening Updates These are short updates on different relevant OpenSource projects. They should be 5 mins (preferably) with a maximum of 10 mins (if space allows). No formal submission required ahead of RIPE, but please send a short message to opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net by noon on Tuesday during the RIPE if you want to present an update. Selection of talks are done on Tuesday afternoon. See you all in Budapest! Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip Open Source WG Chairs

Agenda OpenSource-WG RIPE 73
by Martin Winter 05 Oct '16

05 Oct '16

Here is the agenda for the OpenSource-WG at the upcoming RIPE 73: A. Administrative Matters (Working Group Chairs) [5..10 mins] . Welcome . finalize agenda . approval of minutes from previous WG meeting(s) . review of action list B. PCAP BGP Parser [15 mins] Network operations increasingly relies on tools and features to perform in-depth analysis of Internet routing behavior to optimize traffic flows or dissect DDoS attacks. In particular, IXPs commonly operate software routers such as BIRD or Quagga as BGP route servers. However, the implemented data processing features and tools are somewhat limited. BIRD does not support continues BGP exports, MRT dumps allow a post-best-path-selection view only, and the tshark BGP filtering capabilities are limited, just to name a few. In this talk we present a TCP dump BGP parser to overcome these limitations. The raw packets can be captured with tcpdump at the network interface of any software router and either be processed as a live-stream or stored and analyzed subsequently. For a post mortem analysis the BGP parser comes with a rich set of filters and export formats to meet the desired level of granularity. The presentation will showcase some compelling examples. Moreover, the tool can be extended as favored since it is available as open source project at GitHub. (Christoph Dietzel, DE-CIX) C. DHCPKit presentation [20 mins] DHCPKit is a fully customisable DHCPv6 server. It was initially written for ISPs to provision FttH customers, but because of it's flexible architecture it can be used in almost any setup. Behaviour can be customised with simple plugins. Some examples are an Apache Kafka based distributed looking glass, simple CSV-file based prefix delegation and rate limiting. This presentation will give an introduction to DHCPKit and show how it can be customised. (Sander Steffann) D. Automated management of Continuous Integration Jobs When you start testing your software using continuous integration you might start small where manual management is easy. But when you grow bigger it becomes tedious and there comes point in time when you have to do it automatically. In this presentation I will look at different approaches how to use your CI in automated way using reuseable configuration to describe a CI jobs on top of several Open Source CI tools: Jenkins Job Builder // Build Bot // Gitlab CI. (Ondřej Surý, CZ.NIC) E. OpenSource Lightening Updates [20 mins] These are short updates on different relevant OpenSource projects. Regards, Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip OpenSource-WG Chairs

Call for OpenSource WG Chair Nominations (due by Sept 11, 23:59 GMT)
by Martin Winter 21 Sep '16

21 Sep '16

Everyone, The fall RIPE is coming up and this is the time for Open Source WG chair elections. Nomination period is from NOW until Sept 11, 23:59 GMT Chair selection is as follows: - If there are no nominations, then it will continue as is without any vote (both myself and Ondrej are willing to continue) - If there is a nomination, then we will try to decide in a consensus (between existing maintainers and nominees) on how to proceed - i.e. replace someone or add someone as a 3rd maintainer) - If the consensus fails (i.e. if one of the nominations wants to force a vote to replace an existing maintainer and there is a disagreement), then we’ll have a public vote during the Open Source WG (Consensus between existing maintainers and all the nominees) See https://www.ripe.net/participate/ripe/wg/open-source-working-group/open-sou… for details. So if you want to become a 3rd WG chair (not replacing any existing ones or if you want to force a re-election vote against a specific (or any) current WG chair, then this is the time to do so. Please send your nomination to opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net If you miss this chance, then the next nomination period is in one year (each Fall RIPE meeting) The new WG chair starts after the Fall RIPE meeting. Agenda for The OpenSource WG session @ RIPE 72 (Copenhagen)
by Martin Winter 04 May '16

04 May '16

Hope to see everyone in Copenhagen… below is our agenda. Please send any suggested Open Source Lightening talks to the WG chairs by Tuesday, May 24, by 12:00 (week of RIPE) We’ll decide on the Lightening talks on Tuesday afternoon. Our Working Group is scheduled for Thursday, May 26 at 11am. Regards, Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip Open Source WG Chairs. ————— Agenda for The OpenSource WG session A. Administrative Matters (Working Group Chairs) [5..10 mins] . Welcome . select scribe . finalize agenda . approval of minutes from previous WG meeting(s) . review of action list B. High-Speed Network Traffic Monitoring and Troubleshooting using ntopng [20 min] This talk highlights the design and implementation of ntopng, an open source web-based traffic monitoring application able to characterise protocols, user traffic behavior, and identify application traffic. ntopng can spot network bottlenecks, monitor network QoS/QoE, trigger alerts based on thresholds, and assist in network troubleshooting. Leveraging on PF_RING, ntop’s high-speed packet processing framework, ntopng can monitor high-speed networks (up to 100 Gbit when used with a flow-based probe) as well be used as a NetFlow/IPFIX/sFlow collector for flows generated by network routers. ntopng is released under GPLv3 license and its code is available at https://github.com/ntop/ntopng Presenter(s): Luca Deri <deri(a)ntop.org>, Simone Mainardi <mainardi(a)ntop.org> C. Ideas and Challenges on testing a routing protocol - Experiences testing Quagga [20 min] Overview on tools and methologies for testing a routing protocol and the challenges. The talk gives a overview of the work OpenSourceRouting does on Quagga, tools used and the experience of it. The talk is about challenges in building and testing across multiple (unix-based) Operating Systems, experience in static analysis, testing for compliance and scale and automating it all. Presenter(s): Martin Winter <mwinter(a)netdef.org> D. Honeypot as a Service [20 min] Honeypots represent a powerful tool for detecting malicious hosts on the Internet. One of their weaknesses is in their small number and in the fact that with time their addresses become known. To mitigate this disadvantage, we developed a concept of hosted honeypots we call Honeypot as a Service (HaaS) in which normal Internet users may easily participate. By providing such an open tool, the number of running honeypots may be increased significantly. In this presentation, I will present the open source tools we use to run this system and our current experience with its deployment on 2000 devices from project Turris. Presenter(s): Bedrich Kosata <bedrich.kosata(a)nic.cz> E. Open Source Lighting Talks [20 min] Selected on tuesday during the week of the RIPE. Please email any submissions to the WG chairs at opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net until (latest) Tuesday, May 24, by 12:00 (Local time in Copenhagen) These are short updates on different relevant OpenSource projects. They should be 5 mins (preferably) with a maximum of 10 mins (if space allows). No formal submission required ahead of RIPE, but please send a short message to opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net by noon on Tuesday during the RIPE if you want to present an update. Is anyone here familiar with this?
by João Damas 22 Apr '16

http://arstechnica.co.uk/tech-policy/2016/04/anti-innovation-eu-excludes-op… <http://arstechnica.co.uk/tech-policy/2016/04/anti-innovation-eu-excludes-op…> ICT standardisation requires a balanced IPR [intellectual property rights] policy, based on FRAND licensing terms. FRAND licensing—the acronym stands for "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory"—is incompatible with open source, which will therefore find itself excluded from much of the EU's grand new Digital Single Market strategy. Is this simple stupidity or is there some old-fashioned wrong-doing being perpertraded? Anyone familiar with this process in this list who could provide a bit more insight? Joao

Kea (ISC's new DHCP server) license change
by Shane Kerr 12 Dec '15

12 Dec '15

All, I saw this on social media last week: https://www.isc.org/blogs/kea-license-2-0/ Personally I think it's a very good change. A ton of ISC and other BSD-licensed software has been added to proprietary products by companies who give little or nothing back. While anti-social, this is probably even a rational decision by the people in charge. It doesn't lead to a robust and healthy software ecosystem in the long run though. Cheers, -- Shane

Ondrej & Martin ---- Open Source Working Group - RIPE 69 Wednesday, 5 November, 9:00-10:39 Draft Minutes WG Chairs: Martin Winter, Ondrej Filip Scribe: Anand Buddhdev A. Admin matters The working group chairs, Ondrej Filip and Martin Winters, welcomed the participants. The agenda was reviewed and some presentations were shuffled to allow a presenter to leave early. There were no comments on the minutes of the WG session of RIPE 68. There were no outstanding action items. B. Lightning Update Sara Dickinson gave a presentation about Hedgehog. The presentation is available at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/76-Hedgehog_RIPE69.pdf Ondrej Sury asked if they could provide a Flashless version. Sara said that in the upcoming 2.0.0 version, there will be a choice between Flash and SVG. C. Using OpenSource to develop OpenSource Ondřej Surý, CZ NIC The presentation is available at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/77-OS-20141105-RIPE69.pdf Peter van Dijk (PowerDNS) commented that not all projects have resources for running their own gitlab, and recommended the use of Github, Travis and Coverity. D. Use cases of ExaBGP, How ExaBGP Got Where It Is and What Is Next Thomas Mangin Kaveh Ranjbar (RIPE NCC) thanked Thomas for this project, and said that the RIPE NCC is going to start deploying new RIS (Routing Information Service) servers based on ExaBGP, and will provide updates soon. He then asked Thomas if there would be any support for RPKI-RTR (RFC 6810) in ExaBGP. Thomas said he will not do it himself, but he will accept contributions. E. Lightning updates Lua Policy Engine Peter van Dijk The presentation is available at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/55-powerdns-ripe69.pdf There were no questions. Bird Update Ondrej Filip The presentation is available at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/79-BIRD-RIPE-Update.pdf Martin Winter asked how RFC compliance testing was done in the code. Ondrej said there were not many formal methods. He said they have a test network that changes often, and is built badly by design. They also involve beta testers. He said it was not easy to test it in some known ways, so most testing is done with live networks. Quagga Update Paul Jakma The presentation is available at: https://ripe69.ripe.net/presentations/85-ripe69-os-quagga-update.pdf Nick Hilliard (INEX) commented that Cumulus Networks had posted many patches lately, including a fix for a BGP renegotiation problem (causing some peers to just fail to connect after a restart of Quagga). He asked whether Paul could prioritise merging these patches in, especially as they depend on several other outstanding patches. Paul said he wasn't sure which patches they were, and asked Nick to indicate which patches he was talking about. Nat Morris (Cumulus Networks) said that their patches are on GitHub, and one can compile the code, or use their DEB packages directly. He said Cumulus Networks would be happy to help integrating these patches. Jaap Akkerhuis gave an update on NSD 4.1. No presentation was uploaded. There were no questions. F. Open source working group chair terms and conditions Martin Winter and Ondrej Filip introduced the issue of chair selection, and invited the group to give their input. Niall O'Reilly referred the group to Nigel Titley's ideas in the Database Working Group session. Martin asked Niall to give more details. Niall explained that when a chair needs to step down, there's a nomination to the group, followed by a negotiation phase to find a candidate. If this doesn't work, names are drawn out of a hat. Martin thought it may not be the best choice and said that the negotiation phase was a strange idea. Shane Kerr said that a simple vote by show of hands is easy, and he prefers it over other ideas. Gilles Maassen said that RIPE working group work is done by consensus, and so he prefers chair selection by consensus. This would have the advantage of not excluding members who were not in the room. Leslie Carr suggested the use of IRC chat and IRC "hands" for voting. Martin said that most RIPE WG decisions are taken by voting at a meeting; people not present don't have a right to vote. Benedikt Stockebrand (speaking as incoming chair of the IPv6 WG) said that consensus is the best. If possible, it should always be used to select a chair. However, if consensus fails, there should be a policy in place (vote, random draw) as a last resort to stop things getting out of control. Peter Koch (DENIC) said that a vote was probably not the right thing to do. He said that for a proper vote, an electorate is required, and that without a proper setup, an IRC vote could easily be "gamed". He agreed with Gilles Maassen and said that building consensus was important, and that if a tie needed to be broken, then drawing a name out of a hat, rather than a vote, was the fairest method. Kostas Zorbadelos (via chat) asked about introducing candidate profiles. Ondrej Filip said candidates would be expected to introduce themselves on the mailing list about a month before the selection. Martin reiterated the same. Martin then asked or opinion about the number of chairs, and whether it should be two or three. Benedikt Stockebrand said that having two could lead to a deadlock about opinion. Having three makes it easier, because the one who opinion differs from the other two's can perhaps more easily change his mind. Ondrej said that currently having two chairs has led to disagreements, and Martin jokingly added that he usually wins. Martin asked people to think about volunteering for the position of chair, and submit their intention a month before the next RIPE meeting. Ondrej Filip thanked everyone for attending. Meeting ended.

Below is the final agenda for the Working Group session tomorrow morning at 11:00 The agenda is updated with the lightening talks. Agenda for The OpenSource WG session (11:00 Thursday morning in the Side room. Live Remote participation at https://ripe70.ripe.net/live/side/ ) A. Administrative Matters [5 mins] . Welcome . select scribe . finalise agenda . approval of minutes from previous WG meeting(s) . review of action list B. jFlowLib (Thomas King, DE CIX) [15 mins] (https://github.com/de-cix/jFlowLib) This library is able to read and write sFLow and IPFIX data in the format coming from Force10 and Alcatel Lucent boxes. At DE-CIX we use it internally to parse sFlow and IPFIX data, multiplex it (to different collectors), anonymise data and generate graphs. C. OSNT - A community-owned platform for high-performance and low-cost network testing (Gianni Antichi, University of Cambridge) [20 mins] Despite network monitoring and testing being critical for computer networks, current solutions are both extremely expensive and closed source. Into this lacuna we launch the Open Source Network Tester (OSNT), a fully open-source, high performance traffic generator and capture system. This talk will present both the overall OSNT architecture and one of its most prominent use cases: next-generation OpenFlow switches testing. D. Zonemaster - do we need another DNS testing tool? (Patrik Wallström) [10 mins] Zonemaster is a software for testing DNS delegations. It is based on previous efforts such as Zonecheck and DNSCheck, and is a collaboration between AFNIC and .SE. This talk will present how we undertook the project, and what kind of results we have achieved. Results include clear test specifications, a fully functional tool, and an extensible framework for writing custom tools. We will also explore future developments in DNS testing. More about Zonemaster: https://github.com/dotse/zonemaster E. Building an Open-source IPv6 Configuration Architecture for OpenWrt (Steven Barth, OpenWRT) [20 mins] Describing how we implemented and integrated RA, DHCPv6, prefix delegation and softwires (such as DS-Lite, LW4over6 or MAP) into a multi-homing capable system. Showing issues and quirks we found in a variety of ISP and client implementations and describes ongoing development on autonomic configuration and management of next generation home networks as proposed to the IETF homenet working group F. OpenSource Lightening Updates: F1. Lightening Talk: getdns API implementation [5min] (Willem Toorop, NLnet Labs) After a short reminder/introduction of what the getdns library is (an implementation of a DNS API by and for application developers), I'll go over the developments since the last presentation at RIPE68 in Warsaw. F2. Lightening Talk: Scapy, a packet manipulation tool (Valadon Guillaume, ANSSI) A brief presentation of the tool and an update of the development done at http://bitbucket.org/secdev/scapy F3. Lightening Talk: Cumulus Networks automation modules (Leslie Carr, Cumulus Networks) Cumulus has now pushed automation modules to Chef, Puppet, and Ansible (and they're all available on github!) - Why we think automation modules are awesome. G. Closing Remarks [5 mins] Regards, Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip OpenSource-WG Chairs

Co-chairs selection process
by Ondrej Filip 11 May '15

11 May '15

Hello! I am sending current draft of co-chair selection process. Please feel free to comment. [1] The Open Source WG will have two co-chairs. [2] WG may decide to increase a number of co-chairs to three [3] Two months before every autumn meeting there will be a call for co-chair candidates. The nomination period will be 14 days. [4] If there is no application, the current co-chairs continue. [5] Just one co-char can be replaced every year. [6] If there is one (or more) application, the current co-chair and the new candidate start to discuss about among themselves who will be serving next terms. If no consensus is reached until 14 days before RIPE, then we’ll have a voting at the RIPE meeting. The voting system must respect rule number 5. [7] Any issues relating to the selection or replacement of a co-chair which are not covered by the above will be decided by WG consensus during the RIPE meeting. When the WG is unable to reach consensus, the matter will be referred to the RIPE Chair (or their deputy) whose decision shall be final. Ondrej Filip & Martin Winter

464XLAT / RFC 6877 [Re: IPv6 Only Testbed at RIPE68]
by Tore Anderson 12 May '14

12 May '14

Hi all, For those of you who are Linux users (or BSD/OS X hackers¹), and happen to encounter an application or service that doesn't appear to work correctly when connected to the IPv6-only network - do try and see if 464XLAT (RFC 6877) solves the problem before giving up and connecting to the default dual-stacked network. A Linux implementation can be found here: https://github.com/toreanderson/clatd I'd appreciate any feedback, suggestions, bug reports, and so on. I'm unfortunately not in Warszawa, but I am available on IRC (nick "tore"). [1] While clatd is developed and tested only on Linux, I believe it should be possible to port it to BSD/OS X. The actual RFC 6145 packet translations is performed by TAYGA (http://www.litech.org/tayga/) and as long as TAYGA works (I've never tried, but it is available in FreeBSD ports), it ought to be possible to adapt the currently Linux-specific commands in the clatd script that set up the network environment to their BSD/OS X counterparts. Patches are welcome! (Cc: opensource-wg) Tore * Marco Hogewoning > Welcome to Warsaw. Just a friendly reminder: The RIPE is coming up very soon. If you would like to give a presentation during the OpenSource WG session, then please contact us (the WG chairs) as soon as possible. We would like to finalize our agenda soon. (And if you haven't considered a presentation and are thinking about presenting something: At the last RIPE the suggestion came up for someone to talk as a user of OpenSource software in a ISP / Network provider to talk about the experience. Success(es), failure(s), etc.). We don't have a volunteer yet for this talk and would love to have someone talking about their experience. Either at this RIPE or the next one. RIPE67 WG Feedback?
by Martin Winter 21 Oct '13

21 Oct '13

I hope everyone enjoyed the OpenSource WG at this past RIPE 67 in Athens. I would appreciate any feedback about the session (either on this list or mailed privately to the WG chairs at opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net) Logistics? Selection of presentation? Quality of presentations? Quite a few things probably went wrong and I would really like to improve whatever we can for the next RIPE meeting. So please be open with feedback. For the ones who missed the RIPE, the talks and transcripts are online at: https://ripe67.ripe.net/archives/#Wednesday Thanks, Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip (OpenSource WG Chairs)

Good News - Timeslot at RIPE66 confirmed for OpenSource WG/BoF
by Martin Winter 15 Apr '13

15 Apr '13

Everyone, finally we got the time slot confirmed. We managed to get the 90 minute slot from the ENUM WG (who doesn't need it this time) and are now set for 16:00 to 17:30 on Thursday afternoon. (Sorry, it runs parallel with the MAT WG slot this time) The Meeting Agenda is already updated and shows the slot https://ripe66.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/ Now we can go back to the actual planning (and allocate times) and make best use of the time. We have requests/proposals for the following topics: - Open Home Gateway Forum (Introduction to the project and background in it) - Kea (the new DHCP server effort by ISC) - Roundtable on community support / funding / sponsorships and lessons learned there (and discussion on how to get it better) [If you are part of some Open Source project in this community and want to join the discussion and/or present then please contact me (Martin) off-list for planning] - Bird update - Quagga update (actually thinking about skipping this to give more time to other talks - unless there is a big interest) If you want to present anything not listed here (or something I forgot), then please speak up as soon as possible either here in public or send email to me or Ondrej. We need the agenda finalized asap Thanks, Martin Winter & Ondrej Filip

OpenSource Discussions at upcoming RIPE Meeting
by Martin Winter 18 Mar '13

18 Mar '13

Hey everyone, things are slowly moving into place. We now have a slot at the next RIPE meeting in Dublin, but still trying to confirm the length of it. We hope for a 2 hour slot as it was discussed at the closing plenary during the last RIPE meeting. We have a few ideas on what should/can be presented, but would love to get more feedback from the community. Is there some OpenSource software you are using in your network and we should try to get some of the authors to attend? Maybe you know them personally? Anyone here involved in OpenSource and wants to give an update on the project? Additionally, I would like to do some roundtable to talk about financing OpenSource software. I would love to get a few people involved in OpenSource projects to come and talk about their success and struggle - and have a discussion with the community on why they give (or don't give) any support in financial or any other ways to an opensource project. Now is the time to speak up: What do you like to hear / discuss in relation to OpenSource software? Which projects should we try to invite? Discussion is open... - Martin Winter
