Re: [opensource-wg] Call for OpenSource WG Chair Nominations (due by Oct 9, 23:59 GMT)
by Martin Winter 14 Sep '22

14 Sep '22

Everyone, The fall RIPE is coming up and this is the time for Open Source WG chair elections. Nomination period is from NOW until Oct 9, 23:59 GMT Chair selection is as follows: - If there are no nominations, then it will continue as is without any vote (all three of us are willing to continue) - If there is a nomination, then we will try to decide in a consensus (between existing chairs and nominees) on how to proceed - If the consensus fails (i.e. if one of the nominations wants to force a vote to replace an existing maintainer and there is any other disagreement), then we’ll have a public vote during the Open Source WG (Consensus between existing chairs and all the nominees) See https://www.ripe.net/participate/ripe/wg/open-source-working-group/open-sou… for details. So if you want to become a OS WG chair, then this is the time to do so and speak up. Please send your nomination to opensource-wg-chairs(a)ripe.net (mailto:opensource-wg-chairs@ripe.net) If you miss this chance, then the next nomination period is in one year (each Fall RIPE meeting) The new WG chair starts after the Fall RIPE meeting. Regards, Your current Opensource WG Chairs Martin Winter, Ondrej Filip, Marcos Sanz

Open-sourcing of the RIPE NCC’s RPKI core software
by Bart Bakker 14 Feb '22

14 Feb '22

Dear colleagues, This is a cross post from the routing-wg mailing list, as we believe this might We are pleased to announce that we have published the source code used by the RIPE NCC for the RPKI back-end (the RPKI core) under the 3-Clause BSD licence on Github: https://github.com/RIPE-NCC/rpki-core The RPKI core is the RIPE NCC's software for creating and maintaining RPKI objects based on the registry's current status and publishing these in the repositories. The RIPE NCC hosts the authoritative repository internally. We use the repository on Github to publish the source code externally. The first commit is identical to the source code in the RIPE NCC's internal repository at the time of that commit. The changes between releases are squashed and published to this repository on deployment, and the `main` branch reflects the code used by the production CA. We encountered several challenges while preparing this project for an open-source release. The main challenges were that the system uses proprietary elements that were part of the revision history and cannot be made public. Furthermore, it was not possible to review all historic commits. We plan to present our challenges while open-sourcing this project at RIPE 84. If you have any questions about this change, please contact the RIPE NCC's RPKI team at rpki(a)ripe.net. Kind Regards, Bart Bakker Senior Software Engineer RIPE NCC

Dear colleagues, Are you interested in deploying IPv6, but need to learn more about how it works? Do you want to try out a technology before putting it into production? Maybe you need to just test something out? Then join us at our upcoming event RIPE NCC Open House: Building Your Own Test Labs, taking place on Wednesday, 8 December. Read more about the Open House event here: https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/open-house/ripe-ncc-open-house-bu… <https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/open-house/ripe-ncc-open-house-bu…> We will talk to two experts - Ondrej Caletka and Max Stucchi - about the different choices you should make when you want to build your own test labs. Should you use hardware or virtual machines? Which software is best for a certain purpose? Do you want to run your labs in the cloud? The experts will look at different labs they developed and analyse their choices. We will of course open the mic for your questions. You can ask questions on topics like: • Why was a certain solution used? • How much time does it take to develop? • What security issues should you be aware of Take this opportunity to learn more about building test labs and share your experiences as well. Register at: https://meeting-registration.ripe.net/meeting-pub/registration?0&meetingId=… <https://meeting-registration.ripe.net/meeting-pub/registration?0&meetingId=…> I look forward to seeing you online. new open source tool: prefix list aggregator
by Alexander Zubkov 30 Nov '21

30 Nov '21

Hi, I made tools to aggregate prefix lists, repo is here: https://gitlab.com/qratorlabs/plag There are two tools: plageq - makes strictly equal aggregation of prefixes plagmax - maximally aggregates, discarding subsets They should be already quite useful, so everybody is welcome to use them and leave feedback. I have only found some alternatives available: 1) https://github.com/job/aggregate6 This is almost the same, but it is very slow for big lists and eats zillion bytes of memory. My tools need only a couple of seconds for lists of ~2M prefixes and around ~100M of memory (including spare memory, which is not used, total amount is fixed at compile time now) 2) bgpq4 can also do aggregation while fetching the prefix list. It does it fast too, but it is not perfect. My tool on the other hand generates perfect minimization in case of plagmax. And I suppose minimal possible number of lines in case of plageq (actually it is depth-limited in config now, but for deeper depthes there should be extreme number of prefixes in the list) Here are some examples, comparing it to bgpq4. bgpq4 spends most of the time requesting prefix lists and waiting for a response, so do not pay much attention to its times. # time bgpq4 -4 -F '%n/%l\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL >ntt4.0 real 0m 30.38s user 0m 4.29s sys 0m 0.32s # time bgpq4 -4 -A -F '%n/%l{%a,%A}\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL >ntt4.eb real 0m 30.41s user 0m 3.98s sys 0m 0.24s # time bgpq4 -4 -A -R 32 -r 1 -F '%n/%l\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL >ntt4.mb real 0m 31.71s user 0m 3.94s sys 0m 0.22s # time ./plag/plageq <ntt4.0 >ntt4.ep max nodes: 29.03%, 3044261 / 10485760, 34.84MB / 120.00MB real 0m 0.97s user 0m 0.94s sys 0m 0.03s # time ./plag/plagmax <ntt4.0 >ntt4.mp max nodes: 2.83%, 296843 / 10485760, 2.26MB / 80.00MB real 0m 0.47s user 0m 0.44s sys 0m 0.02s # time bgpq4 -6 -F '%n/%l\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL-v6 >ntt6.0 real 0m 7.25s user 0m 1.44s sys 0m 0.03s # time bgpq4 -6 -A -F '%n/%l{%a,%A}\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL-v6 >ntt6.eb real 0m 7.14s user 0m 1.22s sys 0m 0.06s # time bgpq4 -6 -A -R 128 -r 1 -F '%n/%l\n' AS2914:AS-GLOBAL-v6 >ntt6.mb real 0m 8.04s user 0m 1.26s sys 0m 0.04s # time ./plag/plageq <ntt6.0 >ntt6.ep max nodes: 11.38%, 1192943 / 10485760, 13.65MB / 120.00MB real 0m 0.40s user 0m 0.37s sys 0m 0.02s # time ./plag/plagmax <ntt6.0 >ntt6.mp max nodes: 2.57%, 269912 / 10485760, 2.06MB / 80.00MB real 0m 0.22s user 0m 0.19s sys 0m 0.03s # cat ntt4.0 ntt6.0 | shuf | time ./plag/plageq >ntt.ep max nodes: 40.41%, 4237202 / 10485760, 48.49MB / 120.00MB real 0m 2.44s user 0m 2.20s sys 0m 0.07s # cat ntt4.0 ntt6.0 | shuf | time ./plag/plagmax >ntt.mp max nodes: 10.16%, 1065244 / 10485760, 8.13MB / 80.00MB real 0m 1.33s user 0m 1.04s sys 0m 0.04s And here are number of lines in the resulted files: 2038959 ntt4.0 <- unaggregated ipv4 prefixes 414558 ntt4.eb <- bgpq4 equal set 395831 ntt4.ep <- plag equal set 128522 ntt4.mb <- bgpq4 minimal 99794 ntt4.mp <- plag minimal 540047 ntt6.0 <- unaggregated ipv6 prefixes 80764 ntt6.eb <- bgpq4 equal set 79875 ntt6.ep <- plag equal set 38193 ntt6.mb <- bgpq4 minimal 38023 ntt6.mp <- plag minimal

Open Source WG & Virtual Meetings
by Martin Winter 18 Dec '20

18 Dec '20

As mentioned at the end of today's Open Source WG Session, I would like to discuss and get some thoughts from the community on this topic. Recap for the ones which missed the session: The last 2 RIPE meetings were virtual without the usual hallway talks. Our current charter states: "The aim of the Open Source Working Group is to foster discussion among developers, Internet Service Providers and the rest of the RIPE community about open source projects related to the RIPE community" With virtual meetings, the "discussion" outside of the short WG session is much more difficult. RIPE is doing a good job trying to keep the RIPE as a "meeting" and not turning it into a "conference", but the lack of the physical meeting changes many things. Probably much easier to attend, but then some Open Source contributors prefer to meet with the community and get a 2-way exchange. I don't necessarily think we need to change anything, but I would like to have this discussion here on the list to see if there are ways to improve on how we function as a WG. If you have any good ideas, then go ahead and mention them here. Please keep in mind that this is not a discussion of virtual vs physical meetings. That decision is up to RIPE, not the WG. This is just on how we, as a WG, could potentially work better on virtual meetings. Let's discuss. Any cool ideas? Martin Winter Open Source WG Co-Chair

NetBox
by Sander Steffann 16 Dec '20

16 Dec '20

Hi everybody, I have the feeling a lot of people are using NetBox, and I wonder how you are all dealing with things that are not supported or not working the way you want/need. My personal biggest requirement has been to be able to trace DWDM connections accross circuits and patch panels. I became a NetBox maintainer for a while and worked on getting this implemented right in NetBox 2.8 and 2.9. But now 2.10 has been released, and no path trace will traverse a circuit anymore. I have no idea why it's been broken again, and to be honest I don't have the energy to go back and fix it *again*. Jeremy (NetBox "manager") just told me to file a feature request to restore the broken functionality, which is not very helpful. I was wondering: how do other NetBox users deal with this? Maintain your own fork (there seem to be MANY forks on GitHub), stick with a version that works, ...? I know there are people already looking to do a LibreNMS-style fork of NetBox and continue development under more community-friendly management. Would people be interested in something like that? Because that's definitely the style that I want to contribute to :) Cheers, Sander
