My concerns relate to the relatively small number of organisations who feel that because they have not been asked to pay registry service fees since the resources were registered over 20 years ago, that the RIPE NCC is therefore obliged to provide ongoing registration services to them in perpetuity. I don't believe that this is a reasonable position to take because this position is all take and no give.
So we agree we are talking about corner cases. Can you specify what you mean by "registry services"? Here is how I see it. Suppose we have 100 corner cases and they each own a /19. They have an auto-num, route and inetnum objects which is controlled by a mntner object. They send in an email to auto-dbm@ripe.net to update some phone number or email in order to keep the whois data uptodate. In my opinion, this is the only registry service they need and these 100 corner cases should be allowed to continue to do so. If they need something that requires human intervention - "anything", which can include a lost MD5 password for their mntner, then, at that point the RIPE NCC can state "pay membership dues in order for us to continue". -Hank
