Changes to RIPE DNS Infrastructure

Apologies for duplicate messages Dear Colleagues As part of our ongoing preparations for DNSSEC deployment., we have recently made some changes to the RIPE NCC DNS Server infrastructure. Our main DNS server (ns.ripe.net) held a significant amount of primary in-addr.arpa zones and secondary copies of many zones on behalf of other parties. We have split this into several servers as follows. · ns.ripe.net This contains no primary, but many secondary zones. · ns-pri.ripe.net This contains all zones for which RIPE is primary. · ns-[CountryCode].ripe.net This contains all Country Code Top level Domain (CCTLD) zones for which RIPE is secondary. · ns-sec.ripe.net We will deploy this server soon, it currently contains no zones. We are working towards the following: · ns.ripe.net - This will contain /16 IPv4 reverse and /32 IPv6 secondary reverse zones. · ns-pri.ripe.net - This will contain all zones for which RIPE is primary. · ns-[CountryCode].ripe.net - This will contain ccTLD zones for which RIPE is secondary. · ns-sec.ripe.net - This will contain all zones for which RIPE is secondary (excluding those on ns andns-tld). Recognition of AfriNIC as the Fifth Regional Internet Registry

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that, on 8 April 2005 during the ICANN Board meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina, AfriNIC was officially recognised as the fifth Regional Internet Registry (RIR) to serve Africa and the Indian Ocean. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the AfriNIC staff and everyone who has been involved with the formation of the fifth RIR. AfriNIC Transition Completed

Dear Colleagues, AfriNIC is the emerging Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the African and Indian Ocean region. In preparation for its final recognition expected in April by ICANN, AfriNIC began operating as a fully functional RIR for the African region on 21 February 2005. LIRs in the AfriNIC service region can now request IP address space, AS Numbers and reverse delegation from AfriNIC and enter objects in the AfriNIC Whois Database. [Apologies for duplicates] Dear Colleagues, The RIPE NCC DNS Monitoring Service (DNSMON) provides a comprehensive, objective and up-to-date overview of the quality of the service offered by high-level Domain Name System (DNS) servers. It is an active measurement service. It uses our Test Traffic Measurements (TTM) network to provide an up-to-date service overview of certain DNS root and Top-Level Domain (TLD) name servers. An important feature is the ability to view historical data. This allows the rapid analysis of both past and present DNS issues. The service is available through its own website at: http://dnsmon.ripe.net Development of the service started in 2003. During the development phase, we offered the service free of charge to the entire Internet community. This will change on 1 March 2005. On this day, the service will become a regular production service and the following will change: - The RIPE NCC will start to charge a service fee to the administrators of the TLDs using DNSMON. This is a request from the RIPE NCC membership, in order to recover the costs of offering the service. - We will continue to offer the service free of charge to users of the TTM service. - Access to the data on the public website will be delayed by two hours from 4 April 2005. What you should do: 1. If you are the host of a Test Box for the TTM service, you need take no action. Data collection will continue and plots will be available from the website at: http://dnsmon.ripe.net. 2. If you are the administrator of a TLD, we will send you a separate e-mail telling you what steps to take. 3. If you are a member of the public using the data on the DNSMON web site you need take no action. DNSMON measures DNS performance between sites that take part in the TTM service and those where DNS servers are installed. If you are a network operator interested in the performance between your site and the DNS servers, you should consider installing a test box at your site. You can find out more about this at: http://www.ripe.net/ttm In recent months, several users suggested additional features for this service. We have noted all suggestions. As soon as we have finished setting up contracts for this service, we will look at the suggestions and come up with a possible implementation scheme. We will post this on the DNSMON Mailing List. RIPE NCC Roundtable for Governments and Regulators

Dear Colleagues, The RIPE NC is holding a Roundtable Meeting for Governments and Regulators on Wednesday, 30 March 2005 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The purpose of the meeting is to educate and improve relations between the RIPE NCC and officials from within our service region through open discussion. Invitees include ITU Member States (ministers and regulators), members of the ICANN GAC (Governmental Advisory Committee), WGIG (Working Group on Internet Governance) and other related parties. The focus of the discussions will be on Internet governance and management, with particular emphasis on issues of relevance to governments and regulators such as: - How to participate in and influence IP address management policy-making; - The industry self-regulatory open structures and processes used by the RIPE NCC and the global Internet community; - IPv4 / IPv6 address space; - Root name server operations and who is involved; - Internet Numbers and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Process. Hi, I have just noticed that a list of address allocations to LIRs is available on RIPE FTP server: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/membership/alloclist.txt A link to this file is included in both IPv4 and IPv6 pages of RIPE NCC website ("Internet Resources" section). This file replaces former allocs4 and allocs6 files. It contains both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, is easier to read (LIR identifiers are prefixed by their corresponding country codes) and data are even more consistent. There had been a number of messages exchanged on the subject here, some time ago. I would like to thank RIPE NCC for this job, and for making this information available again. Sincerely, Patrick.
