AfriNIC Transition

Dear Colleagues, AfriNIC is the emerging Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the African and Indian Ocean region. In preparation for its final recognition expected in April by ICANN, AfriNIC will begin operating as a fully functional RIR for the African region from 21 February 2005. The RIPE NCC is committed to its members and has therefore created a structured transition for members moving from the RIPE NCC to AfriNIC. Dear Colleagues, There have recently been several requests for us to publish a single file listing all the address space allocated to LIRs. This information, ordered alphabetically by country code, is now published daily in a single file on our FTP site at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/membership/alloclist.txt In addition to this, we continue to publish country, LIR and allocation information in a number of different formats. You can: - Look at all allocations and assignments from the file at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/delegated-ripencc-latest - Look at all 'free' space per /8 from the files in: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/issued/ - Download all database objects (without PoC data) as an archive in the file at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/dbase/ripe.db.gz You can also run inverse queries, in the RIPE Database, for all all resources referencing an LIR's Organisation object. For example, you can find all the resources managed by the RIPE NCC like this: $ whois -h whois.ripe.net -r -iorg ORG-NCC1-RIPE I hope this file meets people's needs. RSS feeds of the ripe.net

I just though of one or two ways to make the content on the RIPE.net even more accessible to the community. I think Vesna mentioned during her presentation at RIPE 48, RSS feeds of training anouncements, RSS feeds of other content like - new anouncements - new documents - etc could be very useful to keep up to date. (especialy after switching to an email program capable of handeling RSS feeds) The other option would be to set up a separate email list for such anouncements so that the title and abstract of every new publication on the site gets posted to the list. -hph

IRRToolSet maintenance moved from RIPE NCC to ISC

Colleagues, We are happy to announce that the maintenance for the IRRToolSet has moved from the RIPE NCC to the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC). Starting now, ISC will support software development and maintenance of this suite. The new web page for this is: http://www.isc.org/sw/IRRToolSet/ The mailing list has been moved. The new address is <irrtoolset(a)isc.org>. E-mail will be forwarded from the existing mailing list (*). The RIPE NCC believes that ISC's software development model matches the IRRToolSet requirements, and that ISC will be a better home for the software. Operators and developers will have a set-up that is more typical to collaborative open source software, from a company that is experienced and focused on it. The RIPE NCC is grateful to ISC for agreeing to maintain this useful set of tools. These pages listed IP allocations sorted by country and by LIR. I used them only for teaching purposes in my university, and they were INCREDIBLY useful for teaching CIDR! The other files containing country and LIR information that are still available do not fit the same purpose: - ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/delegated-ripencc-latest and ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/issued/ do not contain LIR information - ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/dbase/ripe.db.gz contains detailed and "raw" data, as compared to previous "allocs" files For a few days the October 2004 version of allocs4.html (not allocs6) was accessible at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/local-ir/allocations But now this one also has gone... I understand that the other RIRs did not have such files, and I used to be grateful to RIPE for these. Yet I still have a local copy for October 2004, but it is a pity not to be able to access any longer the up-to-date version! I first thought the file was withdrawn for "security reasons". But all the material inside is (presently) still publically avalaible in whois DB. Or even in the following files: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/dbase/split/ripe.db.inetnum.gz (64113 KB) ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/dbase/split/ripe.db.inet6num.gz (310 KB) And these files are much more complete and thus larger than the former allocs4 and allocs6... It seems that these pages had some interest for a few people. Usage Statistics for www.ripe.net in September 2004 at http://www.ripe.net/statistics/www3/www-http/usage_200409.html indicate that "allocs" files ranked 14 and 15 in the top entry pages: 14 2623 0.01% 1398 0.07% /ripencc/mem-services/general/allocs.html 15 2415 0.01% 974 0.05% /ripencc/mem-services/general/allocs4.html with a total 5000 hits cumulated on that month, and similar stats in previous months... (They also ranked 5 and 6 in Top URLs by Kilobytes!) Hope I might contribute to a future reappearance of these files in any access protocol (FTP/HTTP/etc)? Sincerely, Patrick.

NRO Response to ITU Comments on the Management of Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses

Dear Colleagues, As part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process, a proposal has been made that could dramatically affect the way Internet number resources are distributed and managed. On 21 October 2004, the Director of ITU-TSB published a memorandum, "ITU and Internet Governance" for public comment. This memorandum includes a proposal to create a new IPv6 address space distribution process, based solely on national authorities. This could have a serious impact on RIPE NCC Members, Internet operators and the global Internet community at large. The Number Resource Organization (NRO), on behalf of the Regional Internet Registries, has prepared a public response to the ITU memorandum detailing the flaws of the proposal and the negative impact it would have on Internet operations.
