[news] RIPE NCC Re-Affirms Commitment to Operate K Root Name Server

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC has been providing DNS root name service via k.root-servers.net since 1997. As the global Internet community considers changes to the NTIA oversight of key DNS functions, the RIPE NCC wishes to assure the Internet community that our commitment to providing this service and to coordinating appropriately with ICANN and the other root server operators will not be affected by the outcome of these discussions. The RIPE NCC is a not-for-profit membership association under Dutch law. It is governed by its General Meeting and Executive Board, and is guided by the RIPE community. Root name servers are a crucial part of the Internet DNS infrastructure and the RIPE NCC’s role in this area is supported by the membership for the benefit of the global Internet community. In an open letter to ICANN in 2009, the RIPE NCC affirmed our mutual commitment to coordination of DNS root name service operations, acknowledging that a single, unique DNS root is paramount to the stable operations of the Internet and to ensuring global reachability: https://ripe.net/s/kr2h We remain committed to the principles expressed in this letter, and will continue working to operationalise them, independent of changes to the IANA stewardship. Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the accepted RIPE Policy Proposal 2014-01, "Abandoning the Minimum Allocation Size for IPv4", has now been implemented. The full policy proposal can be found at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/policies/proposals/2014-01 The new RIPE Document, ripe-622, "IPv4 Address Allocation and Assignment Policy", is available at: https://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-622/ Please note that we republished the RIPE Document, "IPv4 Address Allocation and Assignment Policy", because it was originally published with a small error. The new, correct document is ripe-622, which deprecates ripe-621. [news] NRO NC Call for Nominations: RIPE NCC Service Region

Dear colleagues, There is a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The NRO NC also performs the role of the ICANN Address Supporting Organization (ASO) Address Council (AC). The term of Wilfried Woeber, who was appointed to the NRO NC by the RIPE NCC Executive Board in November 2011, ends on 31 December 2014. The RIPE NCC Executive Board will select one representative from the nominees to serve a three-year term on the NRO NC beginning 1 January 2015. The decision of the Executive Board will be announced at the RIPE 69 Meeting, which will be held in London from 3-7 November 2014. The deadline for nominations is 8 October 2014. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. There is no limit on the amount of terms someone can serve on the NRO NC. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website. Other individuals may express support for nominated individuals that will be published on the RIPE NCC website. Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Executive Board held its 94th meeting on 19 June 2014. The draft minutes of this meeting are now available, as are the minutes of all Executive Board meetings. The following is a summary of the main items from the meeting. Dear colleagues, The results of the RIPE NCC Survey 2013 identified resource requests as an area for improvement, and we have received feedback from new LIRs about difficulties with the process of becoming a member and requesting Internet number resources. We believe there is a lot we can do to simplify things, so we are currently working to improve the request forms in the LIR Portal. The goal is to make it easier for members to request resources while streamlining our own internal processes. On Monday, 28 July 2014, we will begin updating the following request forms in the LIR Portal: - IPv4 First Allocation - IPv4 Additional Allocation - IPv6 First Allocation This will be followed by improvements to the other request forms (ASN, IPv6 PI and IXP) over the following two months. There will be no service interruptions at any time and the request forms will remain available throughout this process. [service] Server Hosting RIPE Meeting Websites and Archives is Back Online

Dear colleagues, The server hosting the RIPE Meeting websites and archives is back online, following our investigation into the security incident from last week. In this process we identified and removed an old script that was vulnerable to compromise. We also conducted an audit of all the software on the server to make sure it is patched and up-to-date.
