Hi all, Im wondering what do you guys think about the use of IRC instead of mailing list for some quick discussions, chit chat, etc... RIPE already have a unique IRC server, but I'm sure lot of us could host irc servers and irc services (as nickname registrarion, channels, etc.) The IRC could also be a good way to learn about how RIPE works in all of their WG, and I think is a good way to know better each other, have a really good BCOP communication. I'm relatively new to RIPE and maybe this question was answered before, but I didnt found anything searching for "IRC" or "Chat". For sure, I could host and irc server and/or irc services. I worked with them before. As a note, we could see the posibility to be authenticated on IRC based on our RIPE login. Also, channel logs (for logging history) can be publicly available as html. What do you think? I'm crazy? Regards, --Daniel PD: Very sorry for my english :)

Hi, i think this is good idea to have a place for chit-chat, quick discussion, community based help-channel. But i'm not sure, if IRC is the best way for this. (for example, if your client was disconnected/turned off you cannot track back the conversation) Maybe Ripe should create an invite-only facebook chat? Or even more a website for this, with native app for Android/iOS ? On 08/11/2015 01:06 PM, Daniel Baeza (Red y Sistemas TVT) wrote:

Maybe there are people who do not use FaceBook ? I welcome the idea for an ripe IRC Server

But i'm not sure, if IRC is the best way for this. (for example, if your client was disconnected/turned off you cannot track back the conversation)
An IRC bot could be used to track them and provide them via a web page or something similar. You could use an IRC bouncer (znc.in for example) or a cloud based IRC service like irccloud.com, so that you can stay connected and get the chat history. -----Original Message----- From: members-discuss [mailto:members-discuss-bounces@ripe.net] On Behalf Of Varasdy Imre Csaba Sent: 11 August 2015 12:43 To: members-discuss@ripe.net Subject: Re: [members-discuss] Promote the use of IRC Hi, i think this is good idea to have a place for chit-chat, quick discussion, community based help-channel. Seems like all who answered said yes, in the case this go forward, how should we proceed with RIPE? The Network structure, in my opinion, should be: irc.ripe.net (The actual working one) - HUB services.ripe.net - Network Services (Anope), hosted by RIPE.(*) more.irc.servers - Hosted by RIPE Members(**) (*) Services should be configured to use MySQL, then RIPE can make some integration between RIPE Users and IRC Users. Of course, that is if we want to have some kind of association so nobody can be suplanted. (**) The IRC Servers that link to the RIPE IRC Network should accomplish some rules (tbd) and I recommend to spread them. I mean, having 10 servers in France dont make sense. Also, having 10 servers for 40 users dont make sense too. Number of servers to link should be relative to number of users using the IRC. Another note is, in this structure, should be another HUB server, hosted outside of RIPE where all slave servers connect if the RIPE one goes down. Suggestions? --Daniel

Hi Daniel, I think you're overcomplicating this a bit. irc.ripe.net (or any other IRC network) is fine for Chit-Chat. RIPE discussions/chit-chat is already happening in network operator group channels right now. If RIPE spends resources to do this I think it should be brought up at the GM. I see no benefit in expanding the RIPE IRC server into its own IRC network. why even talk about expanding existing irc server, if max user count was 33 :o On 13/08/15 15:11, Hans Petter Holen wrote:
