I wish it were this simple. I agree that IPv6 adoption is the way to go, but removing IPv4 from RIPE services I think will probably achieve the opposite effect (as well as breaking a lot of things).
Not everyone is a residential ISP here, so for instance my home ISP doesn't do IPv6 (https://www.havevirginmediaenabledipv6yet.co.uk/).i
If you do not have IPv6 in 2025 you do have an internet connection. ISPs in the UK like AAISP have been providing residential and business IPv6 for more than 20 years, and tunnels have been available for much longer. Everyone operating a RIPE account should be reading this on an IPv6 connection. If we can't even get our own tech-savvy membership to commit to IPv6 for accessing RIPE services, what the hell are we doing?
Enabling IPv6 at that sort of scale isn't a case of just flicking a switch,
They've had a quarter of a century. We can give them another year. Perhaps two. But lets set a date. Seriously - it's time. This is something I'd like to see RIPE commit to. We can argue about the date, but let's set one. Countries like the Czech Republic have committed to switching off IPv4 by 2032. That's the entire country: https://konecipv4.cz/en/ It has been mandatory for ISPs in Belorussia to support IPv6 for over 5 years now. Cheers, -- Brett Sheffield (he/him) Gladserv Ltd
