Update on RIPE NCC Police order

Dear All, On the subject of the "Police Order" the RIPE NCC received last year, I would like to let you know what has been happening since then. As reported earlier, the RIPE NCC has sought legal advice and, having received that, decided to unfreeze the resources we were ordered to freeze under the police order. This was done in close communication with the Dutch officials involved. Further to that, the RIPE NCC legal team has drawn up a summons, which has been lodged with the court in The Hague. (The full Dutch text as well as a short English summary is available at https://www.ripe.net/internet-coordination/news/about-ripe-ncc-and-ripe/summ...) A reply from the Dutch State is expected in June; what happens after that depends on the course of action the court decides to take. I'm afraid we don't expect a final decision before mid 2013. I'll keep you fully updated as things unfold. Best regards, Nigel Titley Chairman RIPE NCC

Just asking: Does it really make sense for them to "freeze" ressources in the RIPE DB (and if yes, why?)? - My Dutch is pretty bad, sadly. After all it is not like that would stop a rouge ISP from announcing PI/PA space or their AS - even "gone" routing objects are not really to be cared about since most Tier1's build their filters for customers only once unless requested. Sorry, but i just don't see the sense in it at all. -- William Weber | RIPE: WW | LIR: at.edisgmbh william@edisglobal.com | william@edis.at | http://edis.at | http://as57169.net EDIS GmbH (AS57169) NOC Graz, Austria ---- Am 27.03.2012 um 18:35 schrieb Nigel Titley:

Its not about making sense. My personal experience, and no reflection on the motivations of the Dutch Authorities and of course in no way implying anything with respect to the subject matter (and all other disclosures and legal liability limitations), is that people don't really understand what we do and why or our 'impact' and control level. This has, on several incidents, been VERY beneficial to the membership. In others, such as this, a request that we may or may not feel is right would come in and then we have to deal with it. And I will shut up now since the particular language necessary for commenting on this subject matter is giving me a headache. Fahad.
