This is not a matter of "surviving" something - it's a matter of agreeing to a common list netiquette, which could be transcribed as "I will not send autoreplies to the list, but if I do, you can remove me from the list, as I'm violating list policy". I see no reason why everybody who is actively trying to participate on the list has to be tolerant with the dimwits who can't get their mail systems to behave properly. Tolerance works both ways: if you want to join a club, play by it's rules, and "not send autoreplies to mailing lists" is a fairly fundamental one.
