Keep in mind that IANA maintains all technical parameter registries, and assigns all protocol numbers and technical parameters. For reasons of separation they have a standalone budget. My personal view is that the contribution to IANA / ICANN probably is justified for RIPE NCC and its members. The alternatives might well be cheaper, but perhaps not as palatable.
I do understand the importance of IANA. But I also see the amount of numbers that are being maintained, at least for the RIR system, and they hardly justify a multi-million US$ budget. But I can accept Lutz' reasoning for the existence of IANA / ICANN. Gert Doering -- NetMaster -- have you enabled IPv6 on something today...? SpaceNet AG Vorstand: Sebastian v.
