Joint interim meeting, MAT WG + IRTF MAPRG, Wednesday 5 August

Greetings, all, We've heard disappointment from some of you about our decision to opt out of having a virtual meeting at RIPE 80. We made this decision in large part because we believe a big part of the utility of MAT to the community is the networking opportunities between measurement research and tools development and the Internet operations community, which are diminished in a virtual meeting, and at the time we thought waiting until the next in-person meeting was the best thing to do. As none of us now knows how long it will be until we can safely meet in person again, we thought we should make up for the missing meeting. We've also decided to try and take advantage of the virtual format by organizing something that would be difficult-to-impossible to do without heavy logistical lifting for the in-person meeting: holding a joint meeting with the IRTF's Measurement and Analysis for Protocols (MAP) Research Group. MAPRG has much the same format and goals as MATWG, but fosters exchange between measurement research and the IETF protocol engineering community; the two groups' interests overlap substantially. Together with the MAPRG chairs, we are tentatively planning to hold this meeting on Wednesday 5 August 2020 at 15:00 CEST, with remote participation details to follow. If you have something you'd like to present at this joint session, please let us know at mat-wg-chairs@ripe.net by Friday 3 July. Thanks, cheers, Nina and Brian

I believe this is an excellent decision. Let's see how it goes, maybe it would become a good practice for other working groups.

Not me, for the record. I personally started to think that large virtual events don't bring in a lot of sense. Take IETF: maybe half of the WGs I participate in are just skipping the (costly for some) IETF 108, opting for free-of-charge virtual interim calls instead. E.g. dnsop had two or maybe three interims throughout the spring and summer. The change in the format of the WG collaboration, like the one MAT WG would be experimenting with in August, IMO is either necessary, or inevitable, or both. -- Töma
