Greetings, all, It has been a while since we have run our chair selection process (see https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/mat-wg/2015-February/000559.html); as we look to returning to in-person meetings in Berlin it occurred to us that now would be a good time to do so. To save you the fun of clicking through to the list archives, the process is as follows:
1. A call for interested parties is made on the WG mailing list at three yearly intervals, or as needed 2. Interested parties have 2 weeks to make their interest known via the mailing list 3. The MAT-WG chairs issue a call for discussion as per normal. WG members express their approval or otherwise of the presented candidates. 4. After two weeks the chairs declare consensus as they would do for a policy proposal
Following steps 1 and 2 of this process: If you are interested in co-chairing MAT WG, please make your intent known by sending a message to mat-wg@ripe.net by Monday 28 March 2022; once we have a candidate list, wi’ll issue a call for discussion on the list. Many thanks, cheers, Nina + Brian (MAT WG chairs)

I'm a big fan of the MAT wg, see picture attached :). I've been to almost all of the MAT sessions since RIPE66, and I've given presentations in many of them. This wg is a fantastic venue for exchanging ideas, tools, and research findings, and I appreciate the Chairs' dedication throughout the years. I would like to give back to the wg. So, I'm volunteering as a co-Chair. BIO: I'm an engineer focused on developing applications to facilitate day-to-day Internet operations. I'm involved in the Internet community as a frequent presenter, and in various community projects. In the last 10 years I developed and contributed to tools that are commonly used by network operators and researchers to monitor certain aspects of the Internet performance (e.g., BGPalerter, BGPlay, RIPE Atlas, RIPE IPmap, DNSMON, Tracemon, and more). I was a research collaborator in the Compunet team of Roma Tre University. After, I worked in the R&D team of the RIPE NCC. Currently, I'm contributing to the automation and monitoring of the NTT Global IP Network. I'm particularly interested in network measurements, monitoring, data analysis, and data visualization. Ciao, Massimo
Dear all, Disclosure: * Massimo and I are former colleagues at NTT/AS2914 * Stephen and I currently are colleagues at Fastly/AS54113 Seeing fine folk with strong appetite to contribute to the MAT working group: On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 01:45:40PM +0100, Massimo Candela wrote:

Knowing they both have experience working at the NCC itself, also after having switched tracks subsequently continued to collaborate with NCC staff, and the wider measurements & analytics community; I envision that appointing both as co-chair is worth the group's consideration. Given both their track records and their interest to take on this volunteer work, a unique opportunity is presented to this working group. +1 +1 https://sobornost.net/~job/why_not_both.gif Kind regards, Job
Hi all, I'd also like to put myself forward to co-chair MAT WG. I always enjoy MAT WG meetings. I'm a big fan of building connections between people who do network operations and people who do network data analysis, and MAT is a part of that; I think it's a great venue for making progress on how we do Internet measurement. Day-job: I'm in the office of the CTO at Fastly, where I work on Internet measurement and data analysis. Formerly I was on the NCC's R&D team, and through that I have good links within this community and beyond. In that role I participated in the RACI review process; more broadly, I've also sat on IRTF ANRP committees, and on program committees for venues including PAM, TMA, and CCR, which many of you submit work to. I think I have a good view on topics that fit MAT, and I'd like the opportunity to help MAT thrive in the future. Cheers, S. On 3/14/22 05:14, Brian Trammell (RIPE) wrote:

Greetings all I am super excited to see the interest in chairing the MAT-WG. I'd like to put myself forward to take another turn in co-chairing the working group . I have co-chaired since 2015 and would like to continue to be part of the team. Currently I work for Kentik, the network observability company. Previously I have been working as a user of the report and tools we discuss in the working group in various roles over the year, primarily focused on Interconnection, network quality and partnerships. I have been part of the RIPE community for a couple of decades. I welcome the new blood into the MAT-WG co-chair team and if the working group believes that the co-chairs should start afresh, I will be happy to step aside too :) Cheers, Nina On Wed, Mar 23, 2022 at 1:22 PM Brian Trammell (RIPE) <ietf+ripe@trammell.ch> wrote:

Greetings, all, I will be calling consensus on this point tomorrow, but looking over the feedback received during (and before) the comment period, I see a few themes emerging I’d like to get some feedback on before making that call: (1) Support for all three candidates. (2) A desire for new ideas and new energy in the group of chairs (which, as one responsible for the keeping-the-lights-on “sogg[iness]”, especially over the pandemic years, I wholeheartedly endorse). (3) At least one question as to why and whether we can’t have three chairs (which we can). Given these themes, and explicitly asking the community to check my own biases here, I’d like to ask the community if there is support and consensus for appointing all three candidates (Massimo Candela, Stephen Strowes, and Nina Bargisen) as co-chairs of the RIPE MAT WG. Thanks, cheers, Brian

(3) At least one question as to why and whether we can’t have three chairs (which we can).
will more members make the group more informative and productive, ow is it just a social 'compromise' and next time we'll have four ot five? randy
All three are good and have support. Nina has practical experience as chair. Massimo and Stephen bring different current work experience. All three are known to support new ideas. This will be a good chair team with both experience and potential. They will be good for the WG. I wager that the number of chairs might naturally reduce again as time progresses. Let’s have all three of them for now. Daniel --- Sent from a handheld device.

Hi Randy, I’ll take your third question first, because it’s the easiest. From RIPE-692 section 2:
RIPE Working Groups operate under a co-chair model. In this, the co-chairs share the responsibility for all tasks involved in chairing their working group. The co-chairs act together to make any formal statements (for example on policy development) that are relevant to their WG. A WG has either 2 or 3 co-chairs.
So, without amending RIPE-692, no, next time we will not have four or five. Speaking personally now, and not as the non-nominated chair calling consensus: As for the first two subquestions, I know that day job stuff has gotten in the way of my attention to the working group from time to time during the pandemic (indeed, this led in part to my own decision to step down), so appointing three will at least increase available chair attention, which in turn would tend to make the group more informative (through e.g. more active solicitation of the program, as well as a wider network to draw on). As for productivity, I’ve always seen the purpose of the MAT WG as putting measurement-related information, whether measurements, tools, or techniques, relevant to the Internet operations community (specifically in the RIPE region, though we’ve never rejected a talk for lack of specific regional focus IIRC), in front of an audience that would not have otherwise seen it, and to use that information as the basis of conversations that build the community. The second part of this mission, driving new conversations, has admittedly been very difficult to achieve without in-person meetings, and hopefully we’ll do better at it in Berlin and beyond. Will selecting three chairs be more productive by this measure? I tend to think so, for the same reason it’ll make the group more informative. Back to the non-nominated chair calling consensus hat: Given the reality of timezones and the fact that this comment came in close to under the wire Tuesday AOE, let’s extend the discussion period to tomorrow. Cheers, Brian

If you are interested in co-chairing MAT WG, please make your intent known by sending a message to mat-wg@ripe.net by Monday 28 March 2022; once we have a candidate list, wi’ll issue a call for discussion on the list.
Many thanks, cheers,

Agreed: thanks to Brian for running the process, and thanks to the WG for the support. It may have appeared self-serving to engage during the discussion phase but, for the record, I fully support both Nina and Massimo as co-chairs. I'm looking forward to working with both! Cheers, S. I believe we’re ready to call consensus on this question.
We have support for appointing Massimo Candela, Stephen Strowes, and Nina Bargisen as chairs of MAT WG. Congratulations to the new chairs!
I note that our process of record doesn’t say anything about *when* this change will be effective, so the incoming, continuing, and outgoing chairs will meet to manage logistics (and finish putting together the program for our meeting in Berlin next month).
Many thanks, cheers,
Brian

Greetings, all,
I will be calling consensus on this point tomorrow, but looking over the feedback received during (and before) the comment period, I see a few themes emerging I’d like to get some feedback on before making that call:
(1) Support for all three candidates.
Thanks, cheers,
Brian

Greetings, all,
It has been a while since we have run our chair selection process (see https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/mat-wg/2015-February/000559.html); as we look to returning to in-person meetings in Berlin it occurred to us that now would be a good time to do so.
To save you the fun of clicking through to the list archives, the process is as follows:
