Dear colleagues, In the process of transitioning RIPE Atlas anchors towards being a production service, we have developed two documents that describe the service terms: - Draft RIPE Atlas Service Terms and Conditions - Memorandum of Understanding - Hosting a RIPE Atlas Anchor Probe Please see the details in this RIPE Labs article: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/becha/ripe-atlas-anchors-terms-and-conditions If you are currently hosting an anchor, or if you are interested in hosting a RIPE Atlas anchor in the future, we would like to hear any feedback you have on these draft documents. New on RIPE Labs: RIPE Atlas - Packet Size Matters

Dear colleagues, This new RIPE Labs article (contributed by Emile Aben) talks about trying to send large packets over the Internet. Above a certain size, these packets will have to be fragmented, which is known to cause problems. In both IPv4 and IPv6, we see approximately 10% of RIPE Atlas probes that are unsuccessful in pings with fragmented packets, while they don't encounter problems with smaller unfragmented packets. RIPE NCC is Migrating the RIS Dashboard to RIPEstat

Dear colleagues, I would like to remind you of our announcement, made last month. In the coming days, we will be migrating RIS data visualisation to RIPEstat: http://stat.ripe.net We will, therefore, be decommissioning some of the outdated RIS interfaces and tools, and the old backend. We still welcome your feedback, so please let us know your comments so that we can accommodate your needs. More information can be found in the original announcement, below. Regards, Vesna Manojlovic Our Routing Information Service (RIS) has been collecting global BGP routing information for 12 years now. During this period, many different interfaces to analyse and visualise accumulated data have been developed. In line with our long-term goals to provide more consolidated services, we will be integrating the RIS interface's tools and services into RIPEstat. It seems that this is the case where spoofing may cause serious problems to the provider itself, as opposed to someone else in the Internet. So, one could assume that even if there are NATs that allow this stupid thing, there maybe DOCSIS SAV and other safeguards in the BB provider provisioning system. Andrei

Using Atlas for commercial services

[Originally discussed on the RIPE Atlas users mailing list and forwarded here per suggestion of Daniel Karrenberg, to be sure the proper WG has a say.] After reading the Atlas ToS <https://atlas.ripe.net/service-rules/> and checking the FAQ <https://atlas.ripe.net/about/faq/>, I still have a question: Can I use Atlas as a basis for commercial services? The ToS is silent about it. The list in <https://labs.ripe.net/Members/kranjbar/future-of-ripe-ncc-technical-services> gives interesting ideas about new uses of Atlas (specially the part about using Atlas to monitor reachability from Nagios, which could become a service sold to people). Of course, Atlas is "best effort", so one cannot sue the RIPE-NCC if it breaks and stops the commercial service. But it still can be an interesting platform. Today, most Atlas uses seem to be for public research, or for "selfish" measurements (checking my network), including by commercial organisations. But I see nothing forbidding people to sell services (monitoring, quality assessment) to other people, based on Atlas. Is it a good idea to explicitely allow or disallow such services?
