New Face(s) in the Measurements and Tools Area

Gentlepeople, I am very happy to announce that we have a new community builder for measuremnts and tools: Vesna Manjolovic. Many of you will know Vesna already as a trainer and through her very enthousiastic work on our IPv6 promotion and IPv6 related measurements. Vesna has been with the RIPE NCC for more than 10 years; it gives me great pleasure to promote her to a position that makes optimal use of her capabilities and ambitions. Vesna's first priorities will be to establish relationships with current and potential sponsors of RIPE Atlas and to help develop a plan for the evoloution of RIPE TTM. RIPE Atlas sponsors and RIPE TTM customers will hear from her soon. The decision to hire internally not only affirms that initiative and effort are rewarded at the RIPE NCC; it also provides the budgetary room to engage another person to help with the community building for measurements: Ann Barcomb will therefore join Vesna in October. >From that time both Vesna and Ann will start to work on additional goals such as building a strong community around RIPEstat. RIPE63 Call for Presentations

Dear Working Group Colleagues, RIPE63 will be held in Vienna 31 October - 4 November (http://ripe63.ripe.net/). The MAT-WG session is scheduled to run between 16:00 - 17:30 CET on Thursday 3 October, though this may be subject to change as the meeting plan is still in draft. My co-chairs and I invite you to submit presentations or suggestions for content you would like to see in this session. As a reminder, the working group charter states: "The purpose of the working group is to provide a forum in which the RIPE NCC and the community can collaborate in the areas of data, tools and analysis relating to the Internet and its infrastructure, with a loose focus on monitoring, diagnosis, analysis and forecasting. It is not the purpose of the working group to compare the performance of networks for marketing purposes." For this meeting we are particularly interested in hearing about measurements and analysis around the recent IPv6 day, though any presentations that meet the WG charter are welcome. Just wanted to start a thread where people could contribute thoughts about RIPEstat. To get things started, here are a few things that occurred to me during the call this morning: -- It's great that RIPEstat will now automatically refer you to more- or less-specific prefixes. I had been using REX for some things for exactly that reason. -- The slides mentioned confusion about inaccurate data in some boxes. Since a lot of the information is from the RIPE DB, perhaps you could include a link that would allow the resource owner to correct errors? With regard to geolocation in particular, maybe this could be integrated with the geolocation work the database team is doing: <http://ripe62.ripe.net/presentations/143-DB_Update-62-final.pptx> -- I realize that this is a RIPE tool, but it seems to be quite awkward with prefixes from other RIRs, particularly ARIN. For instance, the allocation/assignment box fails to load (and presents a big red box) for any of the BBN prefixes I tried: <http://stat.ripe.net/query/prefix-assignments/192.1.0.0/16> Also, the WHOIS information ported from ARIN shows things like " <http://stat.ripe.net/AS11488> All of this is just to say that the tool should probably fail a little more gracefully. -- The feature allowing you to move/hide boxes is good to have, but a little clunky. Perhaps you could do something like iGoogle where you can drag around, collapse, or hide boxes just using their title bars? Again, thanks for your continued work on this! --Richard
