Fwd: Network Number Usage Survey-- [ipgr@ISI.EDU]

Does anyone know details about the background, scope and/or aim of that exercise? "ipgr" seems to be unwilling or unable to reply to messages... Thanks, Wilfried.

Hi,
We have been asked by members of the PIER Working Group of the IETF, with the approval of the IANA and Internic, to conduct a survey of a section of the IPv4 address space.
Your address appeared in the InterNIC database as the likely person to ask about the following set of network numbers: [....] Your answers are important in planning future allocation of the IP address space. Thank you for your time.

Hi Wilfried, Maybe I can provide some background info to this. You probably know that Bill Manning started a project to look if all the class A's that have been allocated in the past, are still in use. As a result of this exercise, a substantial number of A's have been returned to IANA for reallocation. As a new exercise, Bill is trying to get back 192/8 and ask the people who are using it, to renumber to CIDR-blocks. Since most of 192/8 was assigned in a sequential fashion, the savings to the routing table may be substantial; as far as I remember, 192/8 is responsible for close to 50% of the total size of the routing table. So, while the savings to pool of free address space may be smaller, the savings to the routing table may be substantial if this succeeds. As to the unresponsiveness of ipgr@isi.edu, keep in mind that Bill asked everybody in 192/8.... Hope this helps, Geert Jan On Fri, 19 Jan 1996 20:45:30 MET "Wilfried Woeber, UniVie/ACOnet" wrote:
