I have an idea about virtual servers. There should be a new DNS resource record, containing additional port or URL information. Or this info may be recorded in TXT records:
There is already work going on in that very direction by the people that work with URLs, URNs and the like in IETF circles. The lines they are working along are in line with what you suggest, but more integrated to other infrastructures, like Object Identifiers and the like.
