The proper thing is for new LIRs to attend these workshops: http://www.ripe.net/cgi-bin/courselist.pl.cgi
What should be required is that part of these workshops have time allocated for the LIRs to introduce themselves to the hostmasters and explain anything specific that they do differently.
I fully agree with you on this. But i see the suggestion more like a way for RIPE to get an understanding of the actual day-to-day work a LIR has. And it could be hard to explain during a meeting or a training course. I visit would show this more clearly.
The LIR list at: http://www.ripe.net/lir/registries/indices/data/index.html is 208K in size! How many LIRs are there - 1000? How long would it take for the RIPE hostmasters to visit ALL of them?
This list has formly exploded in the last month. But the suggestion , as i saw it, is not based on that RIPE should visit everyone on this list.
The logistics of having the hostmasters taking a traveling tour of Europe, Africa and the Middle East just doesn't make any sense. This should be handled during the training course that all LIRs should have to attend.
This suggestion could be based on the LIRs that are willing to share the cost for RIPE to perform a visit to them. It would not be forced on anyone. Just give the chance for those who wish to discuss "LIR problems" on the home turf. But i think that alla the postings point on one important thing: The financing. If we could solve this without increasing the cost for all the LIRs, and do this within RIPEs budget, then this could be supported by many. Regards /Amar Telia Net
