Fwd: [v6ops] WG Last Call on draft-ietf-v6ops-cpe-slaac-renum
Hello, folks, v6ops is WGLC'ing one of the documents (https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-v6ops-cpe-slaac-renum-01) we have authored to improve the reaction of SLAAC to renumbering events. This document contains recommendations for Customer Edge Routers. For background, you may want to consult: https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-v6ops-slaac-renum-01 If you have any comments/feedback, please do let us know. If possible, on the v6ops list (https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/v6ops) Thanks! Good morning everyone, in this light I am wondering two things: - Why did the essential netboot related information (filename / server) never made it into the router advertisements? (I know they exist in dhcpv6) - Would this be the right platform to discuss an extension to router advertisements to include a "boot-url" instead of the legacy server + filename format? The latter is already supported by iPXE for years and as far as I can see, many boot roms are based on iPXE already. Best regards, Nico Fernando Gont <fgont@si6networks.com> writes:

I think this is related to the main conceptual difference: RAs are periodically multicasted to all nodes on a link, while DHCP(v6) sends tailored information to individual nodes, and only on request.
- Would this be the right platform to discuss an extension to router advertisements to include a "boot-url" instead of the legacy server + filename format?
It might at least be a place to connect with others interested in working on that, before moving over to the IETF. Wolfgang

The reason (other than probably that nobody proposed it) is that in theory SLAAC is used for basic network configuration. And that for other stuff, DHCPv6 is used ("M" bit set in RA messages).

This should be done in 6man, rathen than v6ops, since this woudl be a protocol extension/update. Thanks, -- Fernando Gont SI6 Networks e-mail: fgont@si6networks.com PGP Fingerprint: 6666 31C6 D484 63B2 8FB1 E3C4 AE25 0D55 1D4E 7492
