Here are a few words from Peter Steinhäuser: After one term as the co-chair of the RIPE-IoT WG I still have the feeling that there's a lot more we can do. Although the latest activites (especially during the last RIPE meetings) point into a good direction there's still too little overall activitiy, I think. Matter and Thread are relatively new but are gaining traction. Since thread is based upon IPv6 the actual network impact of IoT devices will increase. Working closer with other RIPE WG's (i.e. DNS or IPv6) can bring more purpose to this WG. My work background offers other opportunities for discussions and working on standards: In the last year I did work with our team to bring device fingerprinting into the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) which has been adopted as the solution for TIP's Enterprise WiFi software stack. Since it's fully integrated into OpenWrt and open source it has the potential to become a standard solution. We did already receive very helpful feedback that helped improving the approach. In my role as project manager for prplOS in the prpl Foundation I'm also in contact with the industry organisations (BBF, WBA) that drive integration of IoT devices into the management approaches of large network operators. While I do understand their desire to get an overview of the network topology at their customers' homes for troubleshooting and servicing I believe there's a line to be drawn between what the operators need and the privacy requirements of their customers. I want to increase the collaboration between our community and such organisations to bring in the RIPE communities standpoint and ideas. The operator's activities regarding IoT are at an early stage and it's a good time to bring in other views on the matter and make them aware. That's the reason I arranged a talk for the next RIPE meeting about the BBF's current activities, which will allow the WG to provide feedback directly. I would appreaciate your support for my standing again for co-chair for this WG, I'm convinced that I can contribute a lot and will work on initating new activities with my co-chair.
