Report from first APNIC's hackathon

Sofia wrote this great report, so I wanted to share it with you: "At the end of February 2018, APNIC held its very first Hackathon, co-located with the APRICOT 2018/APNIC 45 conference in Kathmandu, Nepal. It would be nice to run into each other, or -- we could try to make that happen? Any recommendations for the sessions or speakers to see/meet? Merging RIPE NCC hackathon lists & still some places for IPv6 event in Copenhagen

Hi all, in the days before our hackathon Version 6, we are realizing that we have too many hackathon-related-mailing lists, and want to merge them. On one hand, I want to be able to keep in touch with the participants from the previous hackathons (and you with each other); on the other hand, I can understand if you also have too much email & too many lists, and don't want to receive more... So, this is the plan: - in two weeks, I will merge the previous 5 lists into one - I will close the 5 old lists You have two weeks to un-subscribe from the "small list", and then you will also have an opportunity to un-subscribe from the joint list. You can do it yourself, or you can ask me to remove you. If you do nothing, I will take that as a silent consent to stay on the list. We do not use it too much: few times a year, to let you know about the upcoming events. Tremors were felt (measured 5 on RS) at my hometown, Lucknow [1] (around 500km away from epicentre). Phone lines were disrupted for an hour. DVB-T signals are still disrupted. Internet connectivity is okay — this is from 1 vantage point. Advancing your hackathon projects

All of the projects I saw in Amsterdam looked great, and I know a few of you may be continuing to finish up work in advance of the upcoming RIPE meeting in May. If any of you are interested in small grants to develop additional enhancements to make the visualizations even more valuable to the community – we at Comcast have a grants fund to which you can apply. See http://techfund.comcast.com/. The grants usually take 30 – 60 days to review once submitted, so it probably won’t get you something before the RIPE meeting. But it may nevertheless be of interest to some of you. Of course, the same basic rule from the hackathon applies — the work should be open sourced and beneficial to the general RIPE Atlas / RIPE / Internet community. While I will not be at the May RIPE meeting, at least one person from my team will be: Chae Chung (copied). Feel free to reach out to him if you have any interest in discussing Internet performance measurement and visualizations. :-) Regards Jason

Detecting when a historic stream has finished and switching to realtime events

Just had this question, so I'll share the answer here because it isn't yet documented properly: If you want to stream historic results at an accelerated speed, and then when you get to the present time switch to the live stream, you have to do the following: 1. subscribe to the stream with startTime (and optionally stopTime) set, and speed set to something more than 1.0 2. wait for the replay to finish, and then re-subscribe to the live stream without time parameters e.g.: socket.on('atlas_replay_finished', function(params) { // params are what you used to subscribe console.log('Stream finished:', params); // Subscribe to the live stream socket.emit('atlas_subscribe', {stream_type: 'probestatus'}); }); // Subscribe to a stream for a historic interval at x12 speed socket.emit('atlas_subscribe', {stream_type: 'probestatus', startTime: 1427551200, stopTime: 1427551300, speed: 12});

The experimental RIS BGP streaming API is available for the purposes of this hackathon, with the following caveats: * This as an experiment: we want to know if it's feasible and if there is demand for it. There's no guarantee that it will continue to exist! * The interface (parameters and outputs) will undoubtedly change over time. * This is a prototype and not currently operationally stable. I'll keep it going on a best effort basis throughout the weekend. Poke me (gently) if it dies. Getting the (very) recent history for a measurement from the streaming API

Hi! You now have or will soon have the preview version of the streaming API documentation on your USB stick. As I mentioned, I actually forgot to document the parameter for giving you enough data to cover the gap between the latest stuff in the REST API and the version of "now" in the live stream. You do it like this: socket.emit('atlas_subscribe', { msm: MSM_ID, sendBacklog: true }) This will give you an "amount" of data (currently 4 minutes, but we reserve the right to change this!), which is intended to cover that gap in the vast majority of cases. You will have to deal with duplicate results if you're trying to join on to the end of a REST API dataset. Sorry for the omission. Of course you can come and talk to me if you have any other queries. R library for accessing RIPE Atlas data

If I get the chance this week, I might write that package before the hackathon itself. Is anyone else thinking about using R? If yes, this might motivate me further. Hi all, Just another reminder and some more information about meals and events. IMPORTANT! Remember to bring with you your own laptop, chargers and converters. Food and drinks will be provided throughout the event with the exception of Saturday dinner as you will be free from 18.00. - Friday 27 March We start officially at 12 at the TechInc Hackerspace: https://wiki.techinc.nl/images/2/27/Tech-Inc-ACTA-public-transport-snel-v6.… If your hotel is located in the city centre the easiest way is to take the tram number 2, which leaves from Central Station and runs across the centre. Dinner: we finish at 18/18.30 and then we will walk downstairs to the restaurant, inside the same building, to enjoy a tapas dinner. Hi, I have been having trouble with connecting to wireless internet over the past couple days and would like to have something to fall back to in case I don't manage to fix it by next week. Will wired internet be available? If yes, I'll bring a wire. If no, I'll get a USB wifi thingy or something. Thanks Tom
