Henry and I have been preaching this at fine VoIP conferences world wide. The issuance of a SIP URI by a SIP service provider is a fundamental definition of a real SIP VoIP service. Now think of someone selling you a email service but does not offer you a email address. What I find totally amazing is that the VoIP service providers in the US and Europe do not understand the "sticky" nature of naming and addressing. How many millions of AOL users stay with the service just because they wont change email addresses. DT....FT, BT certainly must see the same behaivor fon their consumer ISP products etc. I heard that SIP service providers in Europe wouldn't consider confederating using private ENUM because they thought other providers would poach on each others customers. This is total madness. But what else is new. ATT seems to be clueless about this as well..we heard at the SIP summit in Chicago that Vonage was "considering" giving out URI's to its customers ..but no announcement as of yet. This is the opportunity for the biggest land grab by VoIP service providers ever by locking customers into SIP URI's but they seem to want to shoot themselves in the foot by not offering real internet SIP addressing. If you want to give it a try, do an ENUM Lookup <http://193.80.173.26:8080/elookup/> The pilot number is +4350811, which gives you the switschboard (+4350811-0 also gives you the switchboard, as usual in Austria and Germany. DDI extensions are 4 digits, e.g. +4350811-3184 (try it, surprise ;-) The query gives back the SIP URI "sip:ext@kapsch.net, the e-mail address "mailto:firstname.lastname@kapsch.net the webpage of the company "http://www.kapsch.net" and the same number as tel URI (obviously for H323 clients) Congratulations!

VoIP and convergence hits the mainstream?

Apologies that this is a little off-topic for this list. Last week BBC Radio 4's "In Business" did a programme on VoIP and internet/telephony convergence. It had interviews with BT, Skype and Vonage. While it won't have said anything new to us, I thought the programme was a very good overview of this emerging technology. There was no mention of ENUM though. Noch stärker gestiegen ist mit 227 Prozent die Zahl der ENUM-Domains von 260 auf 850. Dies erscheint wenig angesichts der großen Zahl von Telefonanschlüssen. Unter jeder ENUM-Domains lassen sich aber ganze Telefonanlagen mit vielen hundert bis tausend Nebenstellen betreiben, so dass die Zahl der Anwender von ENUM deutlich höher liegt als die Zahl der Domains. Ein wichtiges Thema des ENUM-Tages war das Thema Sicherheit sowie Konzepte, wie das Problem von SPAM im Bereich der Internet-Telephonie (auch SPIT genannt) angegangen werden kann. In beiden Fällen spielen Aspekte der Authentifizierung (also der Frage, ob der angezeigte Absender einer Nachricht auch wirklich derjenige ist) und des Schutzes vor Datenausspähung und Datenveränderung eine Rolle. Hier wurden von den Referenten verschiedene Modelle für zukünftige Lösungsstrategien vorgestellt. So beschäftigte sich Professor Dr. Andreas Steffen von der Zürcher Hochschule Winterthur mit Sicherheitsfragen auf der technischen Protokollebene des ENUM-Standards. John-Erik Horn stellte seine Vorstellungen für ein rein internetgebundenes Telefonnetz für Deutschland vor, das flächendeckend ENUM beim Verbindungsaufbau einsetzt. ENUM wurde jedoch nicht nur aus technischer Sicht betrachtet. Dr. Volker Leib, Sozialwissenschaftler am Nexus-Institut in Berlin, stuft Internet, Voice-over-IP und ENUM als bedeutende Innovationen ein, die zu grundlegenden Strukturänderungen führen werden und zum Teil bereits geführt haben. So werde sich die technische Grundlage der Telefonie in den nächsten Jahren gewaltig verändern. Große Telekommunikationsunternehmen wie die Deutsche Telekom oder die British Telecom gingen davon aus, dass das bisherige Telefonnetz innerhalb der kommenden fünf bis zehn Jahre abgeschaltet und durch ein auf der Internet-Technologie basierendes IP-Netz ersetzt wird. Dennoch würden die derzeitigen Telefonnummern auch weiterhin in Gebrauch bleiben, ebenso wie die über zwei Milliarden Telefonanschlüsse, die es weltweit gibt. Leib plädiert daher für eine vorausschauende Innovationspolitik, die einen Rahmen für die zukünftige Entwicklung bereitstellt, der Rechts- und Planungssicherheit für die beteiligten Unternehmen gewährleistet. Daneben müsse ein leichter Markzutritt für Anbieter von Voice-over-IP-Diensten ermöglicht werden. Es sei immens wichtig, auf einen baldigen Beginn des ENUM-Wirkbetriebs hinzuarbeiten und den Übergang vom derzeitigen Testbetrieb auf den Wirkbetrieb so unkompliziert wie möglich zu gestalten, so Leib abschließend. Hintergrund: ENUM ENUM leitet sich ab von telephone number mapping und steht für ein Protokoll, mit dem Ressourcen aus dem Telekommunikations- und dem Internetbereich verknüpft werden können. Es definiert eine Vorschrift, mit der eine Telefonnummer in eindeutiger Weise auf eine Domain abgebildet wird. Diese Domain kann dann zur Identifizierung unterschiedlicher Kommunikationsdienste herangezogen werden, zum Beispiel Fax, Mobilfunk, Voice Mail Systeme, E-Mail-Adressen, IP-Telefonie-Adressen, Webseiten, oder Anrufumleitungen. Die Idee, die hinter ENUM steckt, ist so einfach wie bestechend. Statt sich mit einer Vielzahl von Rufnummern und Adressen für Privat- und Bürotelefon, Handy, Fax, E-Mail oder Webseite auseinandersetzen zu müssen, die nur mit sehr viel Aufwand aktuell zu halten sind, genügt es in Zukunft, eine einzige Nummer in sein Adressverzeichnis einzutragen. Die Zuordnung zu den jeweils passenden Ausgabegeräten übernehmen die Einträge im ENUM-Nameserver. Durch die Verknüpfung von Telefonnummern und Internet-Ressourcen ergeben sich völlig neue Dienste. Ein Basisdienst ist das Auffinden eines telephoniefähigen Internet-Endgerätes von einem herkömmlichen Telefon aus. Optional liefert ENUM aber auch Hinweise auf zusätzliche Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten.
