      This is of course true, but it doesn't mean you should wait 5 years.

Not updating you hints is not going to cause you any grief but it is
good practice to keep it
up to date when it changes.

Also note that a hints file change is ***not required***.
You can do that anytime within the next -say- 5 **years** or 
so. Your DNS will continue to work as long as there is at 
least one valid root server address in the hints file.
