I have heard from Bill Manning that ARIN has requested removal of their space from the ip6.int tree, and I'm wondering what the current point of view is for the RIPE NCC.
Has this been discussed before? If so, I'm sorry I missed it :) What was the outcome in that case? I think it is a very good idea to have RIPE NCC and APNIC request delegation removal.
Pim, there has been discussion about the "future" of ip6.int for some time now in the RIPE DNS WG. Mostly this has happened at RIPE meetings rather than on the list. The consensus is that ip6.int should be killed. And at RIPE52, there was some discussion about not just deleting the delegations but removing ip6.int altogether. Co-ordination of this clean-up of the legacy IPv6 reverse address space is being done by the RIRs. They are acting collectively. The plan is to delete the ip6.int delegations by June 1st. The RIRs will do this at the same time. The name servers for ip6.int are getting next to no traffic -- probably nothing but SOA refresh checks -- so removal of this zone should have no operational impact. If you need further info, please check the WG minutes and relevant presentations from the last 3 or 4 RIPE meetings. Andrei Robachevsky from the NCC gave an update on the situation during RIPE52. His presentation is at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-52/presentations/ripe52-dns- ip6-int.pdf My guess is Bill's comment has confused you by implying that ARIN was the only RIR to make a request for removal when in fact they presumably were the first RIR to make that request.
