*(Apologies for cross-posting)* As a researcher, I have never come across a highly intensive and inclusive book like "The Internet Ecosystem". The book englobes the whole Internet Ecosystem with the correct information compared to misleading information from blogs/wikipedia on the Internet. This book was reviewed by Vint Cerf. I have just completed the reading, I will highly recommend it and it is nice to have a copy to keep for reference. Dear all, *Applications are now open for the RIPE Fellowship for RIPE 92 (Edinburgh, 18–22 May 2026) and RIPE 93 (Sofia, 26–30 October 2026).* The RIPE Fellowship helps new voices from across the RIPE NCC service region take part in the RIPE community. *This is the first time we are running the new version of the RIPE Fellowship*. The updated RIPE Fellowship introduces a structured learning approach and personalised coaching. Fellows receive coaching, training and full support to attend and engage in a RIPE Meeting. *Who Can Apply and How: * 1. You can apply if you are 18 or older, live in the RIPE NCC service region, and study or work in a field related to Internet coordination and operations (such as networking, routing, measurements, or governance). 2. You must also complete the RIPE 101 course and pass the RIPE Fellowship quiz. Returning Fellows are welcome to apply if they meet the criteria. Hi Everyone, As we prepare for RIPE 91 which will take place in Bucharest, I wanted to highlight some key points regarding accessibility that we keep in mind: 1. *Accessible Meeting Areas*: All meeting rooms and event spaces should be fully accessible via lifts and/or ramps. 2. *Ramp Design*: Ramps should have a gentle gradient and be wide enough for a wheelchair. It's also important to ensure there is sufficient space at the top and bottom for manoeuvring. This applies especially to stage access and around the hotel. 3. *Accessible Toilets*: Ensure that wheelchair-accessible toilets are available, unlocked, and fully functional. Ideally, they should include a mirror at an appropriate height. 4. *Low Sensory Spaces*: Where possible, designated areas with reduced sensory stimulation for individuals who may need a quieter environment. As an example, the Workspace can serve this purpose. 5. *Step Markings and Handrails*: Steps should be clearly marked for visibility and handrails provided along staircases to support individuals with mobility challenges or visual impairments. 6. *Accessible Transport Instructions*: Instructions for accessible transportation options from the airport to the venue. 7. *Social Venue Accessibility*: Where possible check that all social event venues are fully accessible, including entryways, restrooms, and seating areas. 8. *Shuttle Services*: If shuttle services are offered, check that they include a wheelchair lift. 9. *Guest Room Accessibility*: Accessible guest rooms should be available and booked in advance where needed. These rooms should meet all required standards for space, bathroom access, and usability. If you have additional considerations or questions related to accessibility, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Roasting the RIPE 89 Meeting

Dear DEI WG, it's a third time I'm writing a dump of how the session felt to me. Still quite hesitating whether this is a good idea, yet I learned the hard way that if nobody speaks up, then things may start moving backwards very quickly. Please feel free to join me in roasting, I'd appreciate to not be the only one. Also, if you felt differently, please say it. I'm not the authority on roasting. And also if anybody here feels that these feedback e-mails do not belong here, please tell me. Also, what I don't comment, was probably OK, or under my radar. Feel free to roast that yourself. As always, some things went better. I must explicitly appreciate the board game evening, it was fine and peaceful. (Sorry for stealing all the sets, I couldn't help myself.) We shall definitely advertise this "side-social" a little bit more, also maybe with more information what is provided and what one should bring themselves. Also the steno log, which was too short last time, was fixed for this time, thanks! The meeting venue was OK, nothing was really confusing, yet I think that for the plenaries, the two halls could be converted to one. Also showing the current agenda item (e.g. Connect WG) to the screens at the entrance … would be much convenienter than opening the agenda on screen and then choosing the right or left room. (These notes are probably not diversity-specific but we may have some people who would benefit from these changes more than me.) Meals went worse than what I can remember. - at lunches, the signs were there and looked accurate (this is good!) but one had to pull the signs from the stands to see the miniature number at the bottom (and then remember which number you can't eat) - also at lunches, most of the meat was marked as containing gluten and in some cases also milk, which is quite unnecessary and kinda reckless and it typically led to a very limited choice - I would very much appreciate next time if RIPE requested not only catering, but also something like "do not add unneccessary alergens to the meals" - all in all, not only was it under my expectations, it was quite a challenge to eat well, which felt very unusual for me - also iirc eating vegan wasn't much pleasurable (not directly on my radar tho) - monday and tuesday social lacked markings iirc altogether - at thursday dinner, i got served a dessert containing gluten without knowing it, and i had to explicitly ask after starting it – this happened despite me repeatedly informing the staff about my gluten intolerance - also at thursday dinner, i didn't care too much but apparently many vegetarians / vegans didn't consider the risotto appropriate because of the black coloring which is (as i learned later) hard to get without harming animals - apart from a limited choice of fruits, there was nothing gluten free at the coffee breaks (or at least i couldn't find it); and it also looked quite diabetes-unfriendly - all the mentioned problems can be resolved by putting a bunch of tickboxes to the registration, saying e.g. "gluten", "milk", "eggs", "dia", "crustaceans", "vegan", "other" (i don't remember the most common food limitations), collecting this information, passing it to the suppliers and requesting appropriate accomodations – nowadays it's not hard to do inclusive catering, one just has to think a little bit in advance Tuesday social was quite noisy even before the DJ started but bearable for me. Enough non-alcoholic drinks as well. Thursday dinner alcohol preference (sadly) returned to the Rome standard, and also the noise level went above my parser limits so I was barely able to understand simple sentences. (Not so noisy as in Rome but still significantly worse than in Kraków.) Also, thanks for rescheduling the DEI session, yet now there were BoFs right before the dinner so the problem kinda stayed as before. And even though I'm not planning to attend the thursday dinner anymore, it may be handy for others. I shall reiterate that if these problems were just me-problems, I would just somehow cope, yet I'm quite an experienced traveller capable of many workarounds. I'm speaking up for those who will come after me. Have a winter the way you like it, and see you in Lisboa! Maria PS. Roasting the RIPE 88 meeting (just a bit)

Dear DEI WG, as I promised, instead of presenting this at the DEI session, I'm writing this report as an e-mail. First of all, I must say that the organizers showed an awful lot of effort. Many of the notes from the meeting in Rome were actually taken and considered. Thank you. Follows a honest dump of how I was feeling. This is my report and you could feel differently. Please feel free to add more info (write your reports), suggest solutions, coping mechanisms or whatever else you feel appropriate. Especially if somebody could assess physical accessibility, it would be nice. The meeting venue map was much better than in Rome, I got oriented soon, it was very much accurate, the only confusing thing there was a too big elevator sign which clashed with a hallway. Only now it came to my mind that I could probably note this earlier (on Monday) and the map could be theoretically updated online! Also in Rome, there were the golfers around who looked at us quite gnarly. In Kraków, there was quite some space outside to vibe and the only really weird thing was that cringe car parked across. A little note to smokers directly in front of the entrance, at least once the smoke went in. I didn't care too much but it may be worth noting. Meals went better than last time but there is still much to improve. - at lunches, the signs were there and looked accurate (this is good!) - the same was at the monday social, the meals were marked well, iirc - at tuesday social, there was iirc no signing of allergens so I had to determine the gluten contents from the sign - at thursday dinner, everything went kinda well; for the next meeting, I would suggest to add "food allergies and limitations" open text field to the registration; there is already a vegan option openly offered … and also the allergens weren't declared at all so one had to guess - most of the time, i couldn't find anything gluten-free at the coffee breaks; only sometimes there was some fruit (which is a good thing!) … and the coffee break pastry lacked allergen signs either -> knowing the food allergies from the registration form could allow the catering company to compose a menu inclusive to everybody The public transportation was OK. Nobody hate-crimed me all around Kraków and I felt OK even walking alone in the night. Also the sidewalks were clean enough to walk barefoot (except for some places around dworzec glówny which is expectable). Stenographers did a great job. Displaying the last 5 lines was, however, conflicting with my ADHD. I'm used to sometimes lose my attention and then raise my head, scan the steno log and get back into the context. Longer steno log, please! The Tuesday social went well, there was enough easy-to-access non-alcoholic drinks and the quiet room with switched-off speakers and board games available … was the place where I wanted to retreat to when the DJ started playing. Somebody probably switched the speakers on there though. Instead of finding somebody to play board games with, I just left because I was too socially exhausted to do anything with the noise. The dinner was fine, there was plenty of non-alcoholic drinks (and people were actually drinking them), the organizer was helpful and it wasn't too loud. Also I was offered earplugs! The spacing between tables here was just right to not overhear conversations from other tables and not to have to shout (and body heat dissipated better than in Rome), so I would say that for the next time it's better to strictly limit number of dinner tickets to keep this spacing. Just, eh, please, could we do _something_ with the 1 hour between DEI and dinner? I would have arrived late even if I had left to dress up right after DEI. My suggestion would be to displace both official BoFs to Monday evening and to move DEI to Tuesday. I may have forgotten something so feel free to ask or add your views. All in all, I'm declaring this meeting much more inclusive and welcoming than the previous one. Many thanks to the organizers. Have a nice summer and autumn and see you in Prague! Maria PS. It can be argued that all theese actions can be taken allready, by the Trusted Contacts, RIPE Chair, PC and RIPE NCC meeting organisers today, but the new CoC makes this explicit. Accessibility at RIPE Meetings

Hi everyone, Some of you on this list might have participated in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Tech session at RIPE 87 in Rome. We received a lot of concrete feedback on improvements needed to making RIPE Meetings more accessible. Some of our staff will be visiting the RIPE Meeting venue in Krakow next week, and while we usually check for standard accessibility features (availability of lifts and ramps), we would like to know if there are any additional needs that we should be catering to. Some of the requirements we have gathered based on our checklists and the feedback received are: 1. Checking that all meeting areas are accessible via lifts and ramps. 2. Ramps: The ramp gradient should be gentle and the ramp should be wide enough for a wheelchair. There should be enough space around the ramp for someone to turn onto the ramp. 3. Ensure that wheelchair accessible toilets are available, unlocked and functional. Ideally with a mirror at the right height. 4. Having spaces with a reduced sensory overload - the Workspace (formerly called the Terminal room) for example. 5. Markings on steps for improved visibility and handrails along staircases. 6. Transport instructions for accessibility e.g. from the airport to the venue, to social events. We will work with the meeting venue towards supporting these needs as far as possible. Preferred names in the database

Dear all (copying this to both the Diversity list and the Database list), I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend and recovering from Rome. I’d like to begin thinking about a proposal for preferred names in the database/on resources. Some may have noticed this week (and for a bit prior), I have begun going by Harri instead of Harry. At the moment there is no correct way for me to represent this in the database, as an LIR the details have to match my legal name. I may think about going through the legal processes to change this soon (albeit in the UK this is easier than a lot of places). I know a few people hold their resources under a shell company for this purpose, (e.g I could incorporate Harri Cross Limited to hold the resources and be in the database). This applies to end users who hold PI or ASNs alongside LIRs. It would be good for us to think about a way for these preferred names (and pronouns?) to be shown in the database alongside the process for changing the name of an end user. I know the preferred way a lot of people in this situation would like this to be handled is to totally mask the legal name in the database. The NCC could still validate legal names to know who they are working with - and we will need some compromise here I suspect. A complete lack of verification is of course a bad thing. I have experienced talking to the NCC when handling end users in these situations who have legally name changed and the process seems to be incredibly hard with the lack of understanding on documentation for name changes. Responses from the Registry have included “How can we be sure that <oldName> and <newName> are not identical twins?” (Which in my mind, is rather disrespectful). I also have another name change in process that is being stonewalled by a lack of understanding of documents in different jurisdictions for this. Dear Mirjam and the Diversity mailing list, first of all, thank you, Mirjam, for mentioning the DEI session explicitly in the Highlights. It raises awareness about these topics. Second, I’d like to add some more remarks on accessibility and inclusivity of RIPE meetings. To properly credit their authors, at least from my point of view, I shall namely mention Annika Hannig who often brings these remarks into our frequent discussions, and also Sasha Romijn. (This list is not exhaustive.) Probably none of these thoughts is exclusively mine, and even if it originated in my brain, I would have never been able to boil them down into these points without discussing these points privately for some time. I also decided to not keep these remarks for myself or only for the attendees’ survey. I think that this topic deserves a public or semi-public discussion. Also during Friday, we got a massive amount of thanks for speaking up … so ok, let’s speak up and roast the meeting properly. * I owe to the stenographers so, so much. If any of you read this, THANK YOU. You teached me to actually understand spoken English, and what’s more, to pronounce much much better than ever before. And you know how and why? Attending RIPE meeting talks is like watching a film with subtitles – but live and on an interesting topic. I could finally map the written and spoken form of the language together. And when I stood up and asked my first question on RIPE ever, my English was horrible. It took me 3 iterations to pronounce correctly what I wanted to say – I watched as my speech got transcribed differently and fixed my pronunciation online. I love you and what you actually do for the community. Please stick with us. * Thank you to … was it you, Mirjam, who told the hotel to switch off the “music everywhere”? Thank you. This helped to reduce the sensory overload. * Thanks to Annika who supported me throughout the whole week. Without your love and care, I would be maybe half as productive and now also much more tired. And now for the roast. Please consider this e-mail more of a followup of the thursday talk to continue the discussion which we opened there. The suggested fixes may not work, please feel free to suggest anything else. * To reiterate, Sasha was presenting about physical accessibility: https://ripe87.ripe.net/archives/video/1258/ <https://ripe87.ripe.net/archives/video/1258/> * Also we were presenting about sensory overload issues: https://ripe87.ripe.net/archives/video/1259/ <https://ripe87.ripe.net/archives/video/1259/> * Multiple means of transport to get to the venue actually increase accessibility a lot. * The yes-sir overpoliteness misgendering can be at least reduced by informing the venue that the personnel shall use primarily the badges for getting accurate information, and not to do a wannabe qualified guess. * The meeting venue map in the badge was so crappy that i had to find the “other basement” by accidentally wandering there, and by what I perceived from around, almost nobody knew about these places. Most of the map was not to scale, some actual doors and walls were not drawn in, e.g. the “left” lunch area was very much off and also major hotel landmarks (reception, bar) were completely missing to add to the confusion. This can be fixed by acquiring proper floor plans as a map base, e.g. by taking photos of fire security maps while scouting. * BTW now I came across a proposal for newcomers’ session – what about doing a walkaround of the whole venue, to actually show how e.g. the meeting rooms look like? * The mass arrival of the Italian Red Cross on Friday was inconvenient a lot. The lobby was often crowded and being the whole Friday in the basement actually made me feel even more that the hotel actually didn’t want us there at all. * Handling of food allergies was … miserable. o At coffee breaks, both the vegan and gluten-free pastry was so much separate, that I several times had to break off a group and go explicitly there. This can be fixed by simply reorganizing the pastry tables to include these options directly there … they are all packed anyway and with a little bit of care, it would be possible to prevent contamination even without the plastic packages. o BTW what about people with diabetes? Was there even something suitable for them? o At lunches, signs were often missing. And I’m lucky with my gluten allergy that I can gamble a little so I often chose not to bother the personnel with properly marking everything. But even for non-allergic people, wouldn’t it be more convenient to know what I’m in fact putting onto my plate? o Also at lunches, I several times spotted people putting pasta on their plate, then adding something else (e.g. spinach) … and touching the pasta on their plate with the spinach spoon. This inevitably contaminated the spinach with traces of gluten. It didn’t kill me but could do huge harm to others. This can’t be fixed easily but even with a simple sign like “one food = one spoon” with a subtitle “contamination spoils the food for others”, people can get at least more aware. o At socials, the food was not only often unmarked, but even after explicitly asking for allergens, the waiters often didn’t know or (worse!) gave incorrect information. This can be fixed by adding a strict requirement on the catering companies to mark every allergy in every single served thing, including beverages. o Last but not least, giving clear and well-marked information in advance helps a lot to properly prepare and do an informed choice. Basically, every single information about catering shall automatically include information how allergies are handled. * And there is an open question about how to handle the badges and stickers. o Please, could the registration desk actively offer the pronoun stickers? Or what about writing the pronouns directly into the registration form and actually printing them on the badge upfront? o Also I’m missing the covid semaphore stickers with distancing stickers – and actually, I’d even advocate for widening the range, like “6ft and mask” / “6ft” / “elbows” / “handshake” / “hugs” / “hugs and kisses” * Last but not least, there is a request for PC to not have the DEI session directly before such a social when you typically want to change your clothes, do some makeup, … The list is (obviously) not exhaustive (but exhausting to write). I tried to dump what was remaining in my memory and what we omitted from the thursday talk.
