Certain sponsored? ASNs without sponsoring-org
So I have now run across several ASNs in which the org is of type "OTHER" yet there is no sponsoring-org, could this please be clarified? Example ASNs: AS200358, AS204842 If it is like I think it is, it must be that they have lost their sponsors but if that is the case, I would like to see a remark that is an "RIPE NCC managed value" saying something like "This ASN does not have any sponsor since YYYY-MM-DD". If the resource (ASN) is used by the LIR itself, there is no need to put any sponsoring-org since there is no sponsoring LIR for such resource. If the resource (ASN) is used by the LIR itself, there is no need to put any sponsoring-org since there is no sponsoring LIR for such resource.

Just an update: Laurens Hoogendoorn from the NCC contacted me and did indeed confirm that ASNs without LEGACY status with an ORG that is OTHER are indeed unsponsored, and that you can look at stat.ripe.net historical whois to find out for how long. Hm, I am a tad puzzled, because AS200358 *does* have an org: reference, although it claims to be a "Registrar" (BoltN Hosting Limited (Registrar Services)). So I would assume that AS200358 is a sponsored AS#? As I am not aware that we use the "Registrar" term or model in the IP registry, I tried to follow up on the org-type: OTHER by an attempt to get a listing of the possible values for org-type: by using the template flag of whois. Unfortunately, neither the short format -t nor the --template syntax is accepted by the whois web interface. "ERROR:111: invalid option supplied" So, the primary Q is: which values are accepted or used in the org-type: attribute? Secondly, are there other flags which cannot be used in the web interface (and why?) Hi Wilfried, Well it does have an org attribute but the organization that is specified is of type "OTHER" and since the ASN is not legacy it would need a sponsoring-org attribute if the organization was of type "OTHER". Hi Wilfried These are the "org-type:" values according to the -v output org-type Specifies the type of the organisation. org-type can have one of these values: o 'IANA' for Internet Assigned Numbers Authority o 'RIR' for Regional Internet Registries o 'NIR' for National Internet Registries (there are no NIRs in the RIPE NCC service region) o 'LIR' for Local Internet Registries o 'WHITEPAGES' for special links to industry people o 'DIRECT_ASSIGNMENT' for direct contract with RIPE NCC o 'OTHER' for all other organisations. Hi Cynthia, Although it can happen that an object in the RIPE Database has no "sponsoring-org:" attribute, this is usually a temporary state of affairs that arises during the deregistration process. There are several cases that can lead to deregistration. For AS numbers with the status ASSIGNED, this can occur when: - the End user organisation ceases to exist - the End User ends his contract with the sponsoring LIR - the End User doesn't have a sponsoring LIR When such cases arise, we send an official notification by email to all registered contacts for the relevant LIR. In the email, we state that the Internet number resources will be deregistered, we explain why, and we give a description of the deregistration procedure. Importantly, with respect to your question, we also provide a timeframe of three months for members to take care of any actions necessary for the deregistration of the Internet number resources. During that time, it is indeed the case that the object will not have a "sponsoring-org:" attribute.
