Whoever told you that is mistaken. If you type "-v role" in the web query form it shows you the allowed syntax for a ROLE object's "nic-hdl:" attribute:
From 2 to 4 characters optionally followed by up to 6 digits
optionally followed by a source specification. The first digit
must not be "0". Source specification starts with "-" followed
by source name up to 9-character length.
So you can set any Nic Handle you wish as long as it follows these rules and it doesn't already exist and has never existed (they cannot be reused after deletion).

I’m trying to create some ROLE objects, but encounter an error:
nic-hdl: Syntax error
I was told from support that in ROLE and PERSON object, I must use AUTO-1 as NIC handle.
This information is not correct for the PERSON object, since I choose my own NIC handle when I created my own PERSON object.
So is there a way around this for the ROLE object, too?
