That was tried before in 1998 (to be overridden by the "-c" switch), but then changed back. I don't remember the reason.
People who use a query/copy/paste/modify/send cycle to maintain the DB data were hit when they forgot to include the -c flag, loosing the chain of changed: attributes forever. Joao
