Currently the API doesn't support this, so you have to use the REST interface to download objects and the MAIL interface to modify them if you don't want to use password authentication.
You can use PGP authentication via the syncupdate interface (via HTTPS) rather than having to revert to MAIL. I do support the concept of improved authentication of some flavour for REST though.
