Dear Colleagues, Because of a very high level of use this afternoon, the response time of <auto-dbm(a)ripe.net> is longer than normal. I have made contact with those who are responsible and I expect the situation to improve as the machine works through the queue. Please be patient. Obviously we at the RIPE NCC Database Group are continuously working to make the performance of the database as good as possible. However, we cannot make improvements in zero time. Proxy abuse

Hi Friends People using proxies on IRC is getting out of hand. On the Undernet as example, proxy users can abuse a chat channel; be properly banned and then return with their real hostmasks... I realize that the above statement is very general, however if any people who are channel operators on any IRC chat network have been experiencing problems with proxies, is there any solutions that the membership can offer? thank you, charles

Searching the RIPE Db

Hi, When searching the Database using http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/search.html for previous assignments, it returns a list of INETNUM's without the date. I have to open each one individually to check if it has been assigned within the last 12 months. During the maintenance work, - Whois Database updates will be stopped, - all update mails to auto-dbm(a)ripe.net will be queued to be processed later, - Webupdate and syncupdate interfaces will be unavailable, - The whois queries will _not_ be interrupted. Announcement on "mnt-lower" changes in the RIPE Whois Database

[ Apologies for duplicate e-mails ] Dear colleagues, The following changes will become effective in the RIPE Whois Database starting from November 26, 2003. These changes are intended to make the database work more consistently, as well as provide an increased level of security and control to users. 1. When creating an inetnum, inet6num or domain object, the "mnt-lower:" attribute in the parent object must authorise the creation. If it is not present, the "mnt-by:" attribute must authorise the creation. This behaviour will allow a more secure hierarchical authorisation scheme in the RIPE Whois Database (similar to RPSS) for those object types. This change is implemented according to the following proposal: Proposed change 2003.0: default to protected inetnum/inet6num/domain http://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail-archives/db-wg/2003/msg00478.html RIPE NCC allocations that don't have "mnt-lower:" attribute will be affected by this change as they are maintained by the RIPE NCC. To prevent this, affected inetnum objects have been updated to include a "mnt-lower:" attribute. The "mnt-lower:" attribute will become optional for all set object types (as-set, filter-set, peering-set, route-set, and rtr-set). The main objective of the "Routing Registry Training Course" is to familiarise the LIRs with the features of the Routing Registry, while introducing the relevant tools and services of the RIPE NCC. The course also offers practical exercises. OVERVIEW OF TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE: - Routing Registry as a part of the RIPE Whois Database and the Internet Routing Registry (IRR) - Specifying routing policies using (RPSL) Routing Policy Specification Language and the RtConfig tool - IRRToolSet - Routing Information Service (RIS) - Routing Registry Consistency Check Project Please note that this is an advanced course. It will: - NOT teach the basics of routing - NOT teach the basics of RIPE Database operations, - NOT describe how to receive Internet resources from the RIPE NCC - NOT describe how to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR) The target audience of the course are technical staff of LIRs: e.g. network operators, engineers etc. This course is not intended for administrative or management staff (e.g. Hostmasters) . It is assumed that all attendees will be familiar with Border Gateway Protocol routing and with the RIPE Database (i.e. creating/modifying objects). Novel NetMail users

Dear Colleagues, In the process of testing mail clients for s/mime compatibility I am trying to install Novell NetMail on our linux test box running RedHat 8.0. I have no previous knowledge at all about this product. I have tried several times to install it and can never get past a window asking for the Administrator user name and password. Should the "e-mail" attribute be mandatory for the "person" object?

Folks, Email is the preferred communication medium when troubleshooting internetworking problems. Time and time again, "inetnum" objects with no valid email address cause grief. In the absence of relevant "e-mail" attributes, desperate administrators sometimes send mail to addresses found in "changed" and "notify" attributes. Sometimes the only option left is resorting to telephone calls, regardless of the expenses, time differences and language barriers often involved. I would therefore like to suggest making the "e-mail" attribute mandatory for the "person" object. If this isn't acceptable, then maybe at least one of the "person" or "role" objects referred to by an "inetnum" object should carry an "e-mail" attribute. Additionally, in order to enhance address validity, I would like to suggest performing some kind of validation on these "e-mail" attribute values - perhaps simple syntax checking, or maybe even full round-trip SMTP testing, or something in between. Dear Colleagues, [apologies for duplicate messages] Next Monday, 10 November 2003, we need to perform a maintenance work on the RIPE Whois Server to replace a faulty piece of hardware. During the maintenance work, - Whois Database updates will be stopped, - all update mails to <auto-dbm(a)ripe.net> will be queued to be processed later, - Webupdate and syncupdate interfaces will be unavailable, - The whois queries will _not_ be interrupted. The maintenance work will start at 12:00 UTC (13:00 Amsterdam time) on 10 November 2003 and expected to last 2 to 3 hours. We apologise for the convenience caused. The argument against making the email attribute mandatory has always been the bootstrapping problem... In the olden days (defined by my children as "when Daddy was young") it was genuinely possible for a person in the RIPE database to not actually have an email address during the setting up phase of a LIR. I would however agree with Thor, that this circumstance no longer exists.
