RIPE Test Database Issue

Dear Helping Center, I would like to learn how to use RIPE database. I downloaded some training guides and user manuals and I watched the video tutorials in Youtube. For this purpose I am using the test database. I created a person-maintainer pair (and separately these objects too) and I tested those objects. If I want to create the "inetnum" object with IP range 10.11.12.0 - 10.11.12.255, there is an error message at the top of the page: " Authorisation for parent [inetnum] 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 failed using "mnt-lower:" not authenticated by: TEST-DBM-MNT". In the older guide are password fields for the created mntner and for the parent mntner (TEST-DBM-MNT), and in the Youtube tutorial is the option to add passwords for the mntners, but I didn't fount these fields in the new version of RIPE. How can I add passwords for my mntner and for the parent mntner in the new version of RIPE? I attached screens from tutorials and from the error message. Lots of failing updates for the last week(+)

Mojn guys I see only FAILED updates for the last weeks - I've setup a simple check that counts the number of objects that failed and plots in a graph through Nagios. In the same script I notify if the number of successfully updated object equals zero. The reason for this is that I had (some years ago) a problem with NRTM dying on me and instead of logging in to the management console and run a "show dynamic", this workaround automatically gives me a warning if ex. NRTM is failing. The last succeeded update was on the 6th of May. Change MNTNER handle?

Not sure if right place here and followed notification procedure to stat(a)ripe.net [ticket #1140111]... I've found some *missing prefix/asn* returned from query to COUNTRY RESOURCE https://stat.ripe.net/data/country-resource-list/data.json?resource=it It seems that response list is missing all those ipv4 resource lines that before were returned as RANGE instead of CIDR, and obviously related asn. For example 151.3.0.0/16 is related to country IT ( https://stat.ripe.net/data/whois/data.json?resource=151.3.0.0/16) but* this prefix and its ASN is missing in response country resource list* of above query. Hi, I am Kshitiz Verma, a Ph.D. student in Madrid, Spain, working in the area of studies on the Internet ecosystem. We are conducting a survey on the Internet disputes, not limited to, but mainly focusing on de-peering. We will appreciate responses from the community that help us build our data on such incidences. We did an initial search ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajn7QWBNzSlLdGo3UzFDVkNvdGVwYn…), but unfortunately the results we obtained were mostly limited to well known disputes in North America. We believe there should be more of them but are hard to find, 1. if they occur outside the Tier 1 regime. 2. if outside USA. 3. because the local news may not always be in English. 4. they may not last long or may not have as big an impact and find place in news. We are posting We are also looking for instances like Youtube hijacking by Pakistan Telecom is not a dispute between any two ASes but still for repairing purposes, connectivity between Pakistan Telecom and PCCW (AS 3491), Hong Kong was disrupted. At the same time, we are not looking for disruption of the Internet connectivity due to an accident like Taiwan earthquake in December 2006. As claimed in http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~misra/news/CD070113.pdf , 500 to 1000 de-peering happens on a daily basis today. We are curious to know how this number has evolved since its inception (starting from post commercialization of NSFNET is already very good but before that is excellent :-) ). Also, as there are so many de-peerings happening, there is a high possibility that most of these don't become International News, so to get information on these disputes we expanded our search to local and regional News but unfortunately this has not added significant information. Mojn guys I had a server crash last week, and when I got it up and running again, the database was not able to receive updates - the whois-server core dumped. I've been there before, so I kept the old pseudo defect database running and rebuild a new DB during the night (downloading latest ripe.db.gz and RIPE.CURRENTSERIAL) Rebuilding ended up with an error. I can't remember seeing this before, but my first thought was that it something to do with the already running database. *** ERROR: Loader failure [139]. So, I ran another make_db - but with the same result. Then I recovered an mysqldump from the start of the week, and it started up OK. Then I activated NRTM and updates started to roll in ... Happy I was for some hours; the server crash again saturday night :-( Today even startup of whois-server fails completely with core dumps, so I've picked another mysql backup and it's curently recovering. It seems me like one of the updates are causing problems - it's just a feeling - not a solid "Hey, here's the culprit!" fact. Parsing responses from the syncupdates-API

Hi all, for my current work I occasionally patch the Net::Whois::Object Perl module (http://search.cpan.org/perldoc?Net%3A%3AWhois%3A%3AObject) which supports talking to the RIPE syncupdates API. Now I'm facing the challenge of parsing the response when creating an object. For example when creating a new handle, the response used to include something along the lines of *** Info: Authorisation for [TS34027-RIPE] from which I could easily extract the handle (which I don't know in advance, because the request I sent contained AUTO-1 as the handle). Now the response doesn't include that information anymore, and instead I get Create SUCCEEDED: [person] TS34027-RIPE Thomas Schoeller from which I don't know how to extract the new handle. I've considered simply using the first word after the [person] block (as regex, \[.*?\]\s+(\S+) or something similar), but that won't work for an inetnum, where the primary key contains spaces. Is there any robust approach on how to extract the primary key from the response? (If person records are the only ones where the primary key is generated from the database, I can special-case that, but it still feels rather fragile). Cheers, Moritz P.S. Hello, I tried to update object in RIPE db as below, but failed. Couple of minutes before I updated domain object 74.245.84.in-addr.arpa (and others before as well) with no error, using identical data (domain attribute changed, of course). Allocations in the test database

Hi all, currently I'm integrating automatic assignment of subnets into an application, and face an issue while testing it. The idea was to use the RIPE test database while developing the application. However the test database doesn't have the same allocations as the real database, so the subnets I am trying to assign are directly below the net 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255. Which of course has a different maintainer, and I can't use PGP authentication for that maintainer either. I've tried to simply create the allocations in the test database, but it failed with the message "ALLOCATED inetnum objects require the administrative maintainer." What's the best way to do deal with that problem? Cheers, Moritz

Hi Colin, That worked. Thanks a lot for the help. I created an inet range 10.11.12.0 - 10.11.12.255 in test db. Now when i go to creating a domain object in test db, I specify the domain as :12.11.10.in-addr-arpa but i get an error message which says that "there is no parent object" even after owning the inet range. Are there some domain values that can be used in test db for testing purposes? Thanks. Digest intervals

Due to low traffic, db-help digests are being sent very infrequently. As an example, the one I received today contained messages posted on 6, 8 and 15 December. This problem can be fixed by setting the mailing list software to send digests at least once a day whenever there are messages. I work in a company where we have been very strict with documenting and creating inetnum objects in RIPE database for IPv4 addresses, which we have allocated to our customers(from /31 networks to /24). However, for IPv6 we have only created inet6num object to our huge /32 IPv6 network, but none of the customer allocations(usually /48) are documented in RIPE database. Should one do this? Is this mandatory? In addition, as I have understood, one might get into trouble if he doesn't document it's IPv4 addresses in RIPE(lose it's allocation)- does the same apply to IPv6 addresses as well? I mean might we lose our /32 IPv6 network if we proceed with current practise and not register customer IPv6 allocations in RIPE database? regards, martin

RIPE and DNS delegations for provider independent addresses

In case "companyA" has /24 provider independent network allocated by RIPE, which has RIPE NCC as a first maintainer and "companyA" maintainer object as a second maintainer, then is "companyA" able to delegate reverse DNS queries to the DNS server it prefers? Or should "companyA" contact RIPE NCC in order to get reverse delegation(http://www.ripe.net/data-tools/dns/reverse-dns) done? In addition, if I know the provider independent IP address, then is it possible to view the delegated DNS server using the whois.ripe.net database? So far I have used "dig +trace -x I.I.P.P" and followed the chain of delegations. regards, martin

I am in need of API access to the RIPE database, both for querying and updating. I have been looking at the REST API documented at http://labs.ripe.net/ripe-database/database-api/api-documentation. I can connect, but I am unable to get a response from the lab.db.ripe.net server. No error or anything else. I'm accessing the server from the address 193.69.55.146. Hello, My organisation is interested in RIPE database. It wants to know what are the main ISP of our customers who connect our website. First we would retrieve IP address of our Internet users then we would query your database to retrieve "netname" attribut ("inetnum" object). To do that we need to download "whois client software" (work on Linux system ?) and query your server : whois -h whois.ripe.net 134.157.0.0 But the number of our daily queries will be too high to query your server. So I think we should donwload your database on our local server. So we have to download "ripe.db.inetnum.gz " ? To query this local database we still need "whois client software" ? RPSL general practical benefits

Hello everybody, As explained previously in another thread, I intended the RPSL RIPE training a few days ago. While writing down a summary for my colleagues, I though about some questions. One general considerations first: Do you know very practical benefits/positive impact of using RPSL? I mean, of course documenting is good, allowing the use of RtConfig might be good too but I'm interessed on your experience about which impact this could have on a network. When attending the course I saw one very practical example. We operate a smal B2B ISP (and we should need to use RPSL). Actually, we do not describe our peers (except 2 upstreams). The result is that the speedtest.net website auto-select an Amsterdam server and so, the customer doesn't have the expect result. Beside the fact that speedtest.net isn't the best way to test your bw, describing our peers would let this website to autoselect a nearest server. This is what I would call a very practical and positive impact on our network. Do anybody have similar experience with other services? Another question :) We are present at the FreeBIX but this IX let the participants use a route server allowing for automatic peerings with anybody that has an open-peering policy. With such an environement, new peering establishement is almost transparent to us. In this scenario, we can't integrate this with RPSL, no? For now we have connection with only one service provider, so we can't register our AS-NUM (but we will do in near future). How do we establish routing via this provider? And after that, if we establish routing via this single provider, and then connect to another provider, register our AS-NUM, how fast and easy will it change - from direct routing to BGP? Weird allocation record for 192.114.0.0

I was doing some processing on the address allocation records published on ripe's ftp websites: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc And I noticed that for some records the db is bizarre. For instance, the address block starting from 192.114.0.0 appeared as as ripencc|IL|ipv4|192.114.0.0|327680|20010306|assigned on allocation files before 03/15/2005. Then it disappeared for several years, and popped out on 06/27/2009 as ripencc|EU|ipv4|192.114.0.0|327680|19930901|assigned Note that the country code and allocation date has been changed. It doesn't make sense if the address block was returned because allocation date(19930901) on 06/27/2009 was even before the previous record(20010306). And on 07/31/2009, it shrunk into a smaller block: ripencc|EU|ipv4|192.114.0.0|21504|19930901|assigned Does this mean part of it was returned? whois queries with respect to RIPE policies

Hi list, During the next days, I'm planning to analyze some suspicious traffic that I collected during an execution of malware. One of my goal is to retrieve additional information for every IP address that is in that traffic. For this, I believe that the whois data is a very valuable source of information. However, I realize that I should not overdo in performing whois queries to RIPE (and RIR databases in general). I expect to query the database ~ 20,000 times per day. Here comes my problem: According to the RIPE policy, I am allowed to query the database even frequently. At the same time, one should avoid querying personal data too often. I am trying now to find a program (e.g., jwhois, the 'usual' UNIX whois client, with some weird parameters) that allow me to comply to the RIPE policies. For my convenicen, if I can somehow avoid it, I'd rather use the online database instead of syncing it and performing requests locally. In addition, I checked the whois usage policies of other RIRs. Admittedly, RIPE has got the far most transparent ones! Others don't give explicit limits in their usage, and I have to hope that I won't be blocked when using whois extensively. Would you please share your experiences, and maybe even give hints about a 'correct' usage of a whois client? Thanks in advance, Chris

RIPADMIN questions

Mojn guys I'm currently having some problems with one of our servers being denied access permanently for abusive behaviour. It should be allowed to hammer my whois service as hard as it wants, so I need to change some of the parameters in RIPADMIN.acl - I guess... I've tried to find some hints about this in the documentation found on http://www.ripe.net/db/docs.html but with no result ;-( I found a workaround by changing the AC_* vaules ( "Access control" ) in rip.config, but there must be a way to allow a single host unlimited number of queries through the RIPADMIN database ? ESET NOD32 BUSINESS EDITION Version 3.0.621.0 - "Internal Server Error" when updating modules from a Remote Server

I am running a LAN with more than 10 computers (PCs) networked via switches and ports using CAT5 cables (RJ45). I have ESET NOD32 as above running on the network and our updates are from our main server over a WAN using a satellite dish. All our PCs are running on Windows XP Professional SP2 and they are P4s. and they are getting updates from the main server but for 1 machine which gives an error message when updates are due. The error message reads "Internal Server error". I have tried to do the updates manually but still get the same error message and I have also tried to uninstall and reinstall the antivirus software but nothing has changed on this particular PC. May anyone with information on how this can be resolved, please assist?? NRTM with RIPE db on debian

Hi all, I'm trying to set up mirror of the RIPE - it works fine as I can send queries to my local ripe installation, but I failed to get the NRTM functionality. I've downloaded the ripe.db.gz and the import with the make_db.sh script was successful. I did some changes to the sample configuration files and the query to my local host returns results from the database. First question - is the NRTM functionality built in the ripe db installtion and configured inside the sources.config file or is it necessary to start another tool which does the updating process? The IP of the local server is registered and with the telnet example in the documentation I receive results of changed records. I'm running version 3.5.2 on debian lenny. In the sources.config file I've made the definition for my database with a nrtm entry and the sources definition which was used for the import of the downloaded ripe.db snapshot. Dear Ripe, You might already be aware of it but there is a bug in the ripe database. If you search for something that should be unallocated in the range between 93.169.24.0 - 193.169.25.255 you will always get a /24 network in Kaliningrad, Russia as the response. Try 127.0.0.1 for example or the unallocated block 175.0.0.0. I assume that you missed a 1 in the from range. Hi Agoston, Thanks for your reply, I installed the Net::Delcheck with all its prerequisite modules on my CentOS Linux 5.2 box running Perl 5.8.8. The installation went fine. Then I copied the required files (DelCheck.pm and Scalar.pm) to a folder defined in the perl @INC paths. Unfurtunatly its still complaining about missing files.!! I'm using the below command to install the whois server, is it the correct one ? # perl Install.PL --verbose --all --dbuser=dbint --dbpass=dbint --start-daemon The error I still get: Use of uninitialized value in string eq at Install.PL line 73. We could not find a working 'Net::DelCheck' for /usr/bin/perl. This is needed for RDNS functionality. You can get it from svn here: https://new-ncc.ripe.net/svn/dns/delcheck/trunk/. Whois information for assigned PA

Greetings, can anyone advise which country should contain the record for 'assigned PA' address? Should it be the country of location of the person/company to which PA was assigned or the country of location of the server and it's datacentre to which it was assigned? Seems, in former case geoip databases will determine the country incorrectly, won't they? But the location of the owner will be seen in both cases in the address field. Is there any RIPE policy regarding that?

Hello Webmaster, I am trying to use scripted queries. I have a very low volume web page which is advertising my house. I try to capture the ipaddress of anyone who views the site, initially because when I did a manual lookup none of the queries seemed to be from my target audience of local househunters. If I got 10 views a day it would be a miracle. I don't think your restriction of my checks is reasonable with sucha low volume of searches. Hi Support, i would like to update the RIPE whois database with the new addresses reallocated to our customer. I have done so in the past with ARIN using the template REASSIGN SIMPLE. How can i do this within the RIPE NCC?
