While most of the press is about washing hands and infection rates and self-isolation and deaths there are other stories. This following story from the Guardian quotes our colleague Alexander Isavnin of the Internet Protection Society on what is happening in Russia. << One attempt has already sparked a backlash: a clumsy mobile application developed by Moscow’s city government to monitor coronavirus patients’ movements. The app, called Social Monitoring, was discovered last week in the Google Play store and requested access to a user’s location, camera, telephone, sensors and other data to ensure they were complying with quarantine. Social Monitoring quickly disappeared from the online store. Eduard Lysenko, the head of Moscow’s Department of Information Technologies, called the application a “test version” released for professional feedback. It would be re-released, he said, and those opposed to installing the app on their phones could opt to receive a temporary device instead. Lysenko also said that Moscow is ready to roll out QR codes that would require Muscovites to register online and reapply each time they sought to leave the house. Citizens will be required to “register, fill out a simple form and a corresponding code will be generated, which can either be put on a telephone, sent by mail, or printed,” he said. Those codes could then be checked by police officers and others with access to a central database. >> https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/02/cybergulag-russia-looks-to-sur... Meanwhile Politico reports that << European researchers think they have found a way to use mobile phones to contain the spread of coronavirus — and help people avoid infection — without sacrificing the region's high standards on privacy. Gordon, thx for the information ;-)! In Austria, we have also a deep discussion about a app called “Stopp Corona App” commissioned by the Austrian Red Cross. Several countries seem to have started using software from Palantir:

How could this possibly go wrong? Nick Matthias M. Hudobnik wrote on 03/04/2020 08:42:

To be positive: https://www.pepp-pt.org/content To me this seems a very very sensible, privacy respecting way to do good by using mobile devices and the Internet. If enough people agree we could make a statement of support. Personally I encourage people and organisations with money to support this effort. Daniel
Dear colleagues, Many organisations are measuring the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on Internet usage: in this most recent RIPE Labs article, we look at four reports: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/becha/internet-measurements-in-the-time-of-cor... You can find more Internet performance measurements aggregated here: https://labs.ripe.net/covid19 Kind regards, Vesna Manojlovic RIPE NCC On 02/04/2020 23:43, Gordon Lennox wrote:

Dear colleagues, The European Body of Regulators, BEREC, has published a first high-level report on the reports they receive from the national regulatory agencies and industry. In summary it seems in line with our own observations that there have been no major disruptions, however it does flag some concerns regarding load on an unspecified Internet exchange in Romania. The document is available at https://berec.europa.eu/eng/document_register/subject_matter/berec/reports/9... Regards, Marco Hogewoning External Relations, RIPE NCC
And one more take: this time, we have republished the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) recommendations for the evaluation of contact tracing apps, since there is an increased interest in the security and privacy impacts of software used for slowing down the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic: https://labs.ripe.net/Members/becha/ten-requirements-for-the-evaluation-of-c...
