Ofcom's Online safety bill consultation
Dear cooperation wg members The UK’s communication regulator, Ofcom, has put out a set of proposals for the consultation regarding the recently passed Online Safety Bill earlier this month. All consultation documents are here: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-1/protecting-... <https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-1/protecting-people-from-illegal-content-online> https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0023/271175/Consultation-at-... <https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0023/271175/Consultation-at-a-glance-our-proposals-and-who-they-apply-to.pdf> More about Ofcom’s proposals: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2023/tech-firms-must-clamp-down-on-ille... <https://www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2023/tech-firms-must-clamp-down-on-illegal-online-materials> As you would see from the materials posted, the consultation has a very broad scope including Contents Codes of Practice, Service Risk Assessment, etc. and responses are due by Feb 23, 2024. Please share your views if you think the RIPE Coop WG should work on any specific aspect of this consultation on the list or during our meeting next week, Thursday, Nov 30th. The online safety bill may end up being used as a template for comparable legislation in other countries, and if it does, then implementation specifics will be something that may also be examined and copied. If the RIPE Coop WG doesn't submit an opinion, then it risks that this opportunity will be lost. So in an ideal world it would be better to engage. Nick

Well said Nick. I think the WG should respond to this consultation. Aside from the potential template/cookie cutter concerns in other jurisdictions, the UK’s Online Safety Act will have an impact on UK LIRs. Who are still members of the RIPE community even if they’re no longer in the EU.
