STT small task team formed re: EC consultation on The future of the electronic comms sector and its infrastructure

Dear colleagues and members We have received a lot of interest from the community regarding our January open call to form a Small Task Team. The STT will work on a Coop WG community response to then pending EC consultation on the future of digital infrastructure in Europe. We plan to share our draft response prior to its submission and we hope to have time allocated at the RIPE86 meeting Coop WG to discuss it further. RIPE NCC, Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan and Uzbektelecom Sign MoU

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC, the Ministry of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and telecommunication operator Uzbektelecom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 9 February 2023. The MoU focuses on cooperation between the parties on the development of the Internet in Uzbekistan and capacity building through training courses, meetings, conferences and workshops. It also includes the promotion of RIPE Atlas, RIS, and IPv6. The parties also agreed to cooperate with academia and support the development of IXPs in Uzbekistan. EU's Chat Control 2.0: a feedback from RIPE?

Peace, A new legislation proposal, dubbed Chat Control 2.0 but formally a "Proposal for a Regulation laying down rules to prevent and combat child sexual abuse”, is now being discussed in the European Parliament. Under the conditions of Chat Control 2.0, messaging platform providers would be required, with no option to abstain, to search data on every customer's phone, including private peer-to-peer chats and e-mails, and send potentially law-breaking (as determined by vague algorithms) pieces of data to authorities for examination. The proposal is explained in more detail here: https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/posts/chat-control/ This is marginally relevant to specifically the Internet provider community, but is largely relevant to the tech community in the EU, because this initiative could be seen by many (including myself) as an attempt on mass surveillance which is violating the fundamental privacy rights of the EU citizens. My question to the coop-wg in that case would be, does the working group see merit in providing feedback on this proposal to the members of parliament, from the tech community standpoint? -- Töma
