The whois servers whois.ripe.net and whois.arin.net seem to have
problems today
as they either don't respond, or when they respond then with empty
results:

%ERROR:101: no entries found
.de domains are handled by DENIC: whois -h whois.denic.de google.de
...
# whois -h whois.arin.net sprint.net
...
No match found for sprint.net.
InterNIC says that the registrar for sprint.net is CSC Corporate Domains, 
Inc. Ergo: whois -h whois.corporatedomains.com sprint.net
