Dear colleagues, Policy proposal 2026-01, "Simplify assignment of first ASN", is now in the Review Phase. This proposal aims to remove the needs assessment for the first AS Number requested by holders of an IP address prefix allocated or assigned directly by the RIPE NCC. This proposal has been updated and it is now at version 2.0. The main difference from version 1.0 is that the routing policy should be documented in the RIPE Database also when the AS number received without providing a justification is in use. The RIPE NCC has prepared an impact analysis on this proposal to support the community’s discussion. You can find the proposal and impact analysis at: https://www.ripe.net/community/policies/proposals/2026-01/ https://www.ripe.net/community/policies/proposals/2026-01#impact-analysis and the draft document at: https://www.ripe.net/community/policies/proposals/2026-01/draft/ As per the RIPE Policy Development Process (PDP), the purpose of this four-week Review Phase is to continue the discussion of the proposal taking the impact analysis into consideration, and to review the full draft RIPE Policy Document. At the end of the Review Phase, the Working Group (WG) Chairs will determine whether the WG has reached rough consensus. It is therefore important to provide your opinion, even if it is simply a restatement of your input from the previous phase. We encourage you to read the proposal, impact analysis and draft document and to send any comments to address-policy-wg@ripe.net before 10 November 2026. Kind regards, Angela Dall'Ara Policy Officer RIPE NCC
Dear all, I believe that the proposal actually moves things into the right direction. Who gets address space from the NCC will in most cases need their own ASN. So, I am in support of the document. With best regards, Tobias On Mon, 2026-10-12 at 11:49 +0200, Angela Dall'Ara wrote:

Hi all, I support this straight-forward change lowering the operational load of the RIPE NCC. I am not quite happy with the fact that we are still sticking with hardly parsed and often incorrect RPL, but it is what it is for now. Thanks Max Emig On 03.11.26 13:29, Alex Le Heux wrote:

The proposal is broadly ok, by virtue of the fact that there is no foreseeable potential future shortage of ASN32s, and we have a garbage collection mechanism in place to collect ones that really aren't used. So overall I'm in favour. Nick Alex Le Heux wrote on 03/11/2026 12:29:
