Oh, and regarding Iljitsch: The root/*tld server operators unfortunately can't force anyone to use EDNS0 compatible software. In theory, everything's simple.
I think the intersection between the group that doesn't use EDNS0 and the group that supports IPv6 is negligible. And it any event, dropping IPv6 glue addresses from the response is hardly deadly. I can understand why the root people are somewhat concerned about the boot strapping thing, but for TLDs this isn't an issue.
I'll leave this part to Peter, since I'm not sure how to care for dropping the "correct" parts - I still believe we'll have to make sure the full set gets through to the requestor, and the dropping occurs there. And then you're again stuck with your 510 Byte limit. Unless...unless of course you can influence the order in which your $DNS_SOFTWARE outputs the records. Alas, I'm not comfortable with dropped content, so I favour the "smaller packet" approach. Anyway, Peter's turn :-) Elmar. -- "Begehe nur nicht den Fehler, Meinung durch Sachverstand zu substituieren."
